And now the CUSMA ramp-up is outlined within the composition of this new advisory committee.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/ForwardGuidance-500px.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"285\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/ForwardGuidance-500px.jpg\" alt=\"carney, forward guidance\" class=\"wp-image-181305\"  \/><\/a>Video featuring Prime Minister Mark Carney and his economic plan for Canada \u2014 released on YouTube on Sunday April 19, 2026 \u2013 sidestepping involvement of the mainstream media.<\/p>\n<p>CUSMA work:<\/p>\n<p>This comes as Canada heads into deeper territory of reviewing and essentially re-negotiating the current Canada-US-Mexico (CUSMA) trade agreement. A present, 85% of Canada\u2019s trade with the United States remains tariff-free, the lowest average tariff rate in the world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/cusma-banner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"107\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/cusma-banner.jpg\" alt=\"CUSMA\" class=\"wp-image-181288\"  \/><\/a>Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA)<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Mark Carney\u2019s news release today describes that as Canada having \u201csecured the best deal of any major U.S. trading partner\u201d, though that is essentially a carry-over from the work of Trudeau\u2019s government under which CUSMA was negotiated twice.<\/p>\n<p>The CUSMA entered into force on July\u00a01,\u00a02020, for 16 years (until 2036).<\/p>\n<p>CUSMA timeline:<\/p>\n<p>The current CUSMA agreement includes a commitment to review the Agreement on the sixth anniversary of its coming-into-force, which is July\u00a01,\u00a02026.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, the countries can decide by consensus on any appropriate actions and whether to extend the CUSMA\u2019s term for another 16 years.<\/p>\n<p>Should there be no consensus to extend the CUSMA\u2019s term in 2026, joint reviews would be held annually until the parties agree to an extension or until the agreement expires in 2036.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement included a commitment to review the Agreement on the sixth anniversary of its coming-into-force, which is July\u00a01,\u00a02026. <\/p>\n<p>Should there be no consensus to extend the CUSMA\u2019s term in 2026, joint reviews would be held annually until the parties agree to an extension or until the agreement expires in 2036.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/islandsocialtrends.ca\/category\/business-and-economy\/economy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"94\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IST-BANNER-600x94-BusinessEconomy-2026.jpg\" alt=\"ist banner, business and economy\" class=\"wp-image-172019\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Maintaining Canadian advantage:<\/p>\n<p>As Canada approaches the Joint Review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), our aim is to preserve that unique Canadian advantage and to build on it,\u201d Carney states today as part of announcing the new advisory committee.<\/p>\n<p>Committee vs council:<\/p>\n<p>Carney has appointed a committee whereas Trudeau had a council. <\/p>\n<p>A committee implies more of a working group that feeds their input on an assigned task to a higher level for action. <\/p>\n<p>A council implies more of a think-tank, possibly with more autonomy but less of a direct role on execution.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/islandsocialtrends.ca\/premium-digital-news-subscriptions-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"590\" height=\"109\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IST-ENews-PromoBanner-Jan2026-590x109-1.jpg\" alt=\"ist, enews, subscription, how to subscribe\" class=\"wp-image-172689\"  \/><\/a>Island Social Trends weekly Premium ENEWS direct to your InBox.
