{"id":619426,"date":"2026-04-21T19:13:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T19:13:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/619426\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T19:13:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T19:13:16","slug":"dry-weather-in-the-forecast-as-ottawa-river-levels-begin-to-plateau","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/619426\/","title":{"rendered":"Dry weather in the forecast as Ottawa River levels begin to plateau"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ottawa.ca\/en\/health-and-public-safety\/emergency-preparedness\/current-and-ongoing-emergencies\/spring-flooding\/current-situation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Water is lapping up against several parks in the nation\u2019s capital<\/a> after the rising Ottawa River burst its banks over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Officials have been warning people who live by the river to take action to prevent flooding for several days, as constant precipitation and fast snowmelt caused the river to swell quickly in the last week. <\/p>\n<p>According to the Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board, the levels for Pembroke, Lake Coulonge, Chats Lake, Britannia, Gatineau-Hull marina, and Thurso <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ottawariver.ca\/2026-increasing-flood-risks-ottawa-river\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">on Monday are close to 2023 measurements.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWater levels and flows are expected to continue increasing from Mattawa to Pembroke over the next few days and are expected to start stabilizing Monday between Lake Coulonge and Lake Deschenes, and Wednesday between Gatineau-Hull and Carillon,\u201d it notes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The water is about 10 cm lower than in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Minor flooding, defined as water impacting lawns and parks, can be seen in low-lying areas in Ottawa close to the river. <\/p>\n<p>Gatineau mayor says 250 residences impacted<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ottawa.citynews.ca\/2026\/04\/20\/water-levels-on-ottawa-river-expected-to-peak-as-spring-flood-concerns-grow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The situation is more severe in Gatineau<\/a>, where water levels have increased rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>Gatineau Mayor Maude Marquis-Bissonnette said that emergency teams have been deployed to monitor conditions and support residents. On Tuesday, she said that about 250 residences are impacted by the flooding, and 41 streets have been closed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a difficult moment for people, it\u2019s not the news we hoped for,\u201d Marquis-Bissonnette said in French on her social media, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DXZT1lFEShS\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">noting that the emergency centre gave an update saying the river increased by 20 cm in only a few days<\/a>. \u201cI think there\u2019s a lot of solidarity in this moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is possible, the mayor noted, that the river could increase by another 10 cm by Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p>Officials at the City of Ottawa echoed the warning, saying a second peak could happen with the melt of a snowpack in northern portions of the river. (Justin Tang\/The Canadian Press via AP)<\/p>\n<p>Weather cooperating with flooding<\/p>\n<p>The forecast for the National Capital Region from Environment Canada is promising.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/weather.gc.ca\/en\/location\/index.html?coords=45.403,-75.687\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">There are no major rain systems expected over the next five days<\/a>. Based on this, experts believe water levels should \u201cplateau or slowly decline over the next two weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday through Sunday should be dry in Ottawa, the weather agency\u2019s forecast notes.
