Kyla Oldacre<\/a> didn\u2019t expect to be in this position.<\/p>\n While the 6-6 center out of Texas<\/a> averaged a career-best 10.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.2 blocks for the 35-4 Longhorns, who advanced to the Final Four, she didn\u2019t hear her name called on WNBA draft night.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n But the following day, the Dallas Wings<\/a> called and signed\u00a0Oldacre<\/a> to a training camp contract. She packed her bags and drove north on Interstate 35.<\/p>\n \u201cI was stressed out. My nerves were up,\u201d Oldacre told The Dallas Morning News<\/a> after practice in Arlington on Tuesday, adding that overall, she was grateful.<\/p>\n Oldacre is one of 22 players on the training camp roster competing for one of 14 spots on the team. Under the\u00a0WNBA\u2019s new collective bargaining agreement, teams must carry 12 active players and may sign up to two additional players on development contracts. Since training camp started Sunday, she\u00a0has been learning a \u201cdifferent language of basketball.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe physicality and new rules that come into play with playing in this league \u2014 I feel like it\u2019s kind of in my favor a little bit,\u201d Oldacre said.\u00a0<\/p>\n Wings coach Jose Fernandez<\/a> said after Monday\u2019s practice that he sees\u00a0Oldacre’s potential.<\/p>\n \u201cI liked her footwork, and she can get up and down the floor,\u201d Fernandez said. \u201cShe had a great rim run today in practice. She didn\u2019t finish, but she beat everybody down the floor \u2026 Our 4s and 5s have to be elite rim runners.\u201d<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n Oldacre spent her first two collegiate seasons at Miami before transferring to Texas, where she\u00a0shot 61.8% from the floor during her final season in Austin.<\/p>\n She performed well against UCLA center and\u00a0WNBA first-round pick Lauren Betts, recording a team-high 11 points and seven rebounds in the Longhorns\u2019 51-44 loss to the Bruins in the Final Four<\/a>.<\/p>\n Oldacre said her time at Texas under coach Vic Schaefer helped strengthen her on the defensive side of the ball and learn new concepts quickly. She said she appreciates Fernandez welcoming all of her questions.<\/p>\n \u201cI ask questions a lot just to make sure, just to get clarification,\u201d Oldacre said. \u201cIt\u2019s been a great opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n The center is not the only Longhorn competing for a spot on a WNBA roster. The Washington Mystics selected Rori Harmon with the 34th pick in the draft, and Oldacre attended her draft watch party.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s her dream come true, and I love that for her,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Should she make it through the next week of camp, Oldacre has the opportunity to play on her former home court.
