Up next from Zach Cregger (Barbarian, Weapons) is a fresh new take on the Resident Evil film franchise with an untitled movie that\u2019ll be the filmmaker\u2019s follow-up to Weapons, which just raised his horror credibility even further. Cregger has teased that his Resident Evil movie won\u2019t be shackled by the video game franchise\u2019s lore, and we\u2019ve got more teases this week.<\/p>\n

Zach Cregger\u2019s Resident Evil will be the eighth live action movie<\/a> based on the hit video games, but Cregger admits in a chat with Ringer Movies<\/a> that he\u2019s never actually seen any of the previous movies. His vision for Resident Evil, it seems, is going to be quite original.<\/p>\n

Cregger tells Ringer, \u201cIt\u2019s gonna be not at all like Barbarian and Weapons. It\u2019s going to be a rock \u2019em, sock \u2019em\u2026 it\u2019s for me to play. And turn my brain off and just make an\u2026 Evil Dead 2\u2026 get crazy with the camera. Austin Abrams is gonna be my guy. It\u2019s a weird, fun, wild story.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis movie follows a person from point A to point B. It\u2019s like a real time journey, where you just go deeper and deeper into the depths of Hell,\u201d Cregger continues. \u201cAnd it\u2019s really a love letter to the games. Because I love those games. This is a story that I would\u2019ve wanted to write whether I got the IP or not. I just happen to be able to have these Resident Evil people be down. So I get to play in that sandbox. I\u2019m doing it because I think this movie is going to be fucking awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI consider Resident Evil an original thing,\u201d the filmmaker notes. \u201cAnd I think you will too when you see it.\u201d<\/p>\n

What does Cregger mean by that? Well, he recently told SFX Magazine<\/a> that his movie will not be \u201ccompletely obedient to the lore of the games,\u201d but rather he\u2019s trying to tell \u201ca story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games.\u201d And he tells Inverse<\/a> in a separate chat that the movie won\u2019t feature any characters from the Resident Evil games.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me say this: this is not breaking the rules of the games,\u201d Cregger tells Inverse. \u201cI am the biggest worshiper of the games, so I\u2019m telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games.\u201d Cregger continues in the same chat, \u201cI\u2019m not going to tell Leon\u2019s story, because Leon\u2019s story is told in the games. [Fans] already have that.\u201d<\/p>\n

After seven live action movies and a short-lived Netflix television series, Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions are bringing\u00a0Resident Evil\u00a0back to the big screen, with Cregger\u00a0writing and directing.\u00a0Zach Cregger\u2019s\u00a0Resident Evil\u00a0hits theaters\u00a0September 18, 2026.<\/p>\n
