{"id":620371,"date":"2026-04-22T05:11:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T05:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/620371\/"},"modified":"2026-04-22T05:11:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T05:11:12","slug":"bombshell-development-in-iain-hunt-case-with-national-security-concerns-bc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/620371\/","title":{"rendered":"Bombshell development in Iain Hunt case with national security concerns &#8211; BC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was a cold Monday morning on March 29, 2021, when Trina Hunt\u2019s remains were discovered near Hope.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>More than five years later, a bombshell development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, a complete state of disbelief,\u201d Stephanie Ibbott, Trina Hunt\u2019s cousin-in-law, said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes no sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Attorney General of Canada filed an application in federal court in Ottawa last month under subsection 38.04 (1) of the Canada Evidence Act, seeking to withhold \u201csensitive\u201d information in the case against Trina\u2019s husband \u2014 Iain Hunt \u2014 because, if revealed, it would threaten national security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is extremely rare,\u201d Michel Juneau Katsuya, a former CSIS intelligence officer, told Global News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously here, somebody wants to protect some sensitive information that individuals, somewhere, somehow, represent a risk to the federal government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Iain Hunt\u2019s trial scheduled for October 2027'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/6P_IAIN_HUNT_TRIAL_DATE_OM01QYD9.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2:20<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIain Hunt\u2019s trial scheduled for October 2027\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Iain Hunt was charged in February 2025 with one count of indignity to human remains for allegedly disposing of his wife\u2019s body, two days before he reported her missing from Port Moody in January 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767930311_275_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you'll never miss the day's top stories.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you&#8217;ll never miss the day&#8217;s top stories.<\/p>\n<p>No one has been charged with the 48-year-old\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>Nine months after Iain was charged, an unidentified person notified the Attorney General of Canada \u201cthat they believe sensitive or potentially harmful (injurious) information may be disclosed\u2026\u201d in connection with the case against Iain.<\/p>\n<p>A month later in December 2025, the Attorney General of Canada refused to authorize the release of the secret content, stating\u2026 \u201cDisclosure of the information in question would be injurious to national security.\u201d (Source: Attorney General of Canada, Federal Court Application, filed March 2026)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertainly never seen it in this kind of case,\u201d Patrick McCann said.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>He is part of a special group of Canadian lawyers with top secret security clearance for national security proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>In more than 40 years in criminal law, McCann has only been involved in two section 38 applications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefence may not know what the rationale is for withholding it is,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey would know what they are looking for, but they would not know the context that created the national security issue. The Department of Justice will only say a date has not been confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re nowhere close to justice and yet there\u2019s the potential that the whole case, so far, as we know it, could get thrown out, so honestly, where\u2019s the accountability?\u201d Ibbott said.<\/p>\n<p>Iain Hunt is not in custody.
