The industry\u2019s current approach, throwing money at massive infrastructure projects, resembles adding two more lanes to a congested highway. It might offer temporary relief, but it doesn\u2019t solve the underlying problem.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers are staggering. Data center capital expenditures surged 53% year-over-year to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciodive.com\/news\/cloud-ai-data-center-first-quarter-spending-spike\/751199\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.ciodive.com\/news\/cloud-ai-data-center-first-quarter-spending-spike\/751199\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">$134 billion in the first quarter of 2025 alone<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/facebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/facebook\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Meta<\/a> is reportedly exploring a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/world-news\/meta-invests-in-ai-infrastructure-with-200-billion-data-center-125022600244_1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/world-news\/meta-invests-in-ai-infrastructure-with-200-billion-data-center-125022600244_1.html\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">$200 billion investment<\/a> in data centers, while <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/microsoft\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/microsoft\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Microsoft<\/a> has committed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crn.com\/news\/data-center\/2025\/aws-meta-microsoft-nvidia-and-oracle-five-data-center-deals-worth-676b-announced-this-month\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.crn.com\/news\/data-center\/2025\/aws-meta-microsoft-nvidia-and-oracle-five-data-center-deals-worth-676b-announced-this-month\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">$80 billion for 2025<\/a>. OpenAI, SoftBank, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/oracle\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/oracle\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Oracle<\/a> have announced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructiondive.com\/news\/tech-giants-500-billion-for-data-centers\/737952\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.constructiondive.com\/news\/tech-giants-500-billion-for-data-centers\/737952\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">$500 billion Stargate initiative<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/mckinsey\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/mckinsey\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">McKinsey<\/a> projects that data centers will require <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/technology-media-and-telecommunications\/our-insights\/the-cost-of-compute-a-7-trillion-dollar-race-to-scale-data-centers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/technology-media-and-telecommunications\/our-insights\/the-cost-of-compute-a-7-trillion-dollar-race-to-scale-data-centers\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">$6.7 trillion worldwide<\/a> by 2030. And the list goes on.<\/p>\n<p>Yet here\u2019s the uncomfortable truth. Most of these resources will remain dramatically underutilized. The average server utilization rate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/think\/insights\/are-your-data-centers-keeping-you-from-sustainability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/think\/insights\/are-your-data-centers-keeping-you-from-sustainability\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">hovers between 12%-18% of capacity<\/a>, while an estimated 10 million servers sit completely idle, representing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cioinsight.com\/infrastructure\/how-idle-servers-cost-30-billion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.cioinsight.com\/infrastructure\/how-idle-servers-cost-30-billion\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">$30 billion in wasted capital<\/a>. Even active servers rarely exceed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea-4e.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Server-Idle-Coefficients-FINAL-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.iea-4e.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Server-Idle-Coefficients-FINAL-1.pdf\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">50% utilization<\/a>, meaning the majority of our existing compute infrastructure is essentially burning energy while doing nothing productive.<\/p>\n<p>The highway analogy holds true<\/p>\n<p>When faced with traffic congestion, the instinctive response is to add more lanes. But transportation researchers have documented what\u2019s known as \u201cinduced demand.\u201d It\u2019s a counterintuitive finding that proves additional capacity temporarily reduces congestion until it attracts more drivers, ultimately returning traffic to previous levels. The same phenomenon applies to data centers.<\/p>\n<p>Building new data centers is the easy solution, but it\u2019s neither sustainable nor efficient. As I\u2019ve witnessed firsthand in developing compute orchestration platforms, the real problem isn\u2019t capacity. It\u2019s allocation and optimization. There\u2019s already an abundant supply sitting idle across thousands of data centers worldwide. The challenge lies in efficiently connecting this scattered, underutilized capacity with demand.<\/p>\n<p>The Environmental Reckoning Data center energy consumption is projected to triple by 2030, reaching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energycentral.com\/energy-management\/post\/data-center-dilemma-MlR5WuYUZXPtAnI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.energycentral.com\/energy-management\/post\/data-center-dilemma-MlR5WuYUZXPtAnI\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">2,967 TWh annually<\/a>. Goldman Sachs estimates that data center power demand will grow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmansachs.com\/insights\/articles\/is-nuclear-energy-the-answer-to-ai-data-centers-power-consumption\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.goldmansachs.com\/insights\/articles\/is-nuclear-energy-the-answer-to-ai-data-centers-power-consumption\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 iHosVH\">160% by 2030<\/a>. While tech giants are purchasing entire nuclear power plants to fuel their data centers, cities across the country are hitting hard limits on energy capacity for new facilities.<\/p>\n<p>This energy crunch highlights the significant strains on our infrastructure and is a subtle admission that we\u2019ve constructed a fundamentally unsustainable system. The fact that companies are now buying their own power plants rather than relying on existing grids reveals how our exponential appetite for computation has outpaced our ability to power it responsibly.<\/p>\n<p>The distributed alternative<\/p>\n<p>The solution isn\u2019t more centralized infrastructure. It\u2019s smarter orchestration of existing resources. Modern software can aggregate idle compute from data centers, enterprise servers, and even consumer devices into unified, on-demand compute pools. This distributed approach offers several advantages:<\/p>\n<p>Immediate availability: Instead of waiting years for new data center construction, distributed networks can utilize existing idle capacity instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Cost efficiency: Leveraging underutilized resources costs significantly less than building new infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Environmental sustainability: Maximizing existing hardware utilization reduces the need for new manufacturing and energy consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Resilience: Distributed systems are inherently more fault-tolerant than centralized mega-facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The technical reality<\/p>\n<p>The technology to orchestrate distributed compute already exists. Some network models already demonstrate how software can abstract away the complexity of managing resources across multiple providers and locations. Docker containers and modern orchestration tools make workload portability seamless. The missing piece is just the industry\u2019s willingness to embrace a fundamentally different approach.<\/p>\n<p>Companies need to recognize that most servers are idle 70%-85% of the time. It\u2019s not a hardware problem requiring more infrastructure. Nor is it a capacity issue. It\u2019s an orchestration and allocation problem requiring smarter software.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of building our way out with increasingly expensive and environmentally destructive mega-projects, we need to embrace distributed orchestration that maximizes existing resources.<\/p>\n<p>This requires a fundamental shift in thinking. Rather than viewing compute as something that must be owned and housed in massive facilities, we need to treat it like a utility available on demand from the most efficient sources, regardless of location or ownership.<\/p>\n<p>So, before asking ourselves if we can afford to build $7 trillion worth of new data centers by 2030, we should ask whether we can pursue a smarter, more sustainable approach to compute infrastructure. The technology exists today to orchestrate distributed compute at scale.
