The final five minutes of the game saw the Goldeneyes battle a barrage of shots and fend off the desperate Victoire for a 4-3 win.<\/p>\n
It was a \u201chuge\u201d result for Vancouver, said goalie Kristen Campbell, who stopped 25 of the 28 shots she faced.<\/p>\n
\u201cHonestly, we\u2019ve gone through a lot of adversity as a team this year. And I think like in those final minutes, you\u2019re just doing everything you can that\u2019s in your control and just trying to get that win,\u201d she said. \u201cSo I\u2019m proud of everyone for sticking with it. And those were a big three points for us tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n
For head coach Brian Idalski, the gutsy performance said a lot about the Goldeneyes (9-2-4-14).<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re showing up, we\u2019re competing and we\u2019re playing hard for each other. So that\u2019s a huge plus,\u201d he said. \u201cI thought that our response throughout was pretty darn good. So adversity builds character, and so we got plenty of that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tereza Vanisova scored and notched a pair of assists for Vancouver, while Sarah Nurse registered her eighth goal of the season. Claire Thompson and Ashton Bell also scored. <\/p>\n
Nicole Gosling had three helpers for the Victorie (16-5-2-6), and Erin Ambrose contributed two assists. Abstreiter made 18 saves. <\/p>\n
Vancouver was eliminated from playoff contention Saturday with a 6-5 overtime win against the Seattle Torrent.<\/p>\n
Under PWHL rules, though, the club is still competing for the top spot in this year\u2019s draft. The honour is awarded to the team that picks up the most points after being deemed ineligible for the post-season. <\/p>\n
Those points \u2014 known as \u201cgold plan points\u201d \u2014 are particularly important amid uncertainty around how the rest of the draft will be determined due to possible expansion, Idalski said. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe know that if you win that, you get the first pick. So we can control that,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s kind of just a sidebar to us finishing on a high note, and just wanting to play the right way and win some games down the stretch here.\u201d <\/p>\n
Vancouver now has three points, while Seattle has one. The Torrent have two games left to play while the Goldeneyes have one. The New York Sirens, who were eliminated with a 1-0 overtime win over the Toronto Sceptres on Tuesday, have one game left and cannot earn enough \u201cgold plan points\u201d to win the first-overall draft pick. <\/p>\n
Montreal, meanwhile, sits atop the PWHL standings and is fighting the Boston Fleet for first place and the right to pick their semifinal opponent. <\/p>\n
There are still aspects of the game the Victoire want to work on as they make a post-season push, said Ambrose \u2014 including their 6-on-5 play. <\/p>\n
\u201cThose situations are going to come up during playoffs,\u201d said the veteran defender, who had two assists Tuesday. \u201cSo (it\u2019s important) for us to be able to get those reps, and obviously not just reps, but some success on it. Unfortunately, we couldn\u2019t get a fourth, but to get three is pretty big.\u201d<\/p>\n

Goldeneyes defender Sophie Jaques registered an assist on Thompson\u2019s third-period goal and became the first PWHL blueliner to put up 50 points. <\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s just a microcosm of the kind of impact player she is, and her shot and ability to create offence from the blue line,\u201d Idalski said. \u201cSo huge accomplishment for her.\u201d<\/p>\n
