The series From is the most compelling and well-crafted supernatural horror-thriller show to watch. Starring Harold Perrineau, Elizabeth “Liz” Saunders, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Eion Bailey, Scott McCord and David Alpay, the series has had a devoted fanbase, who call themselves the “FROMily,” and there’s a lot for them to unpack from the Season 4 premiere (new episodes Monday on Paramount+ in Canada).

For those less familiar with the underrated show, From, created by John Griffin, is filmed in Nova Scotia. It’s set in a mysterious town that traps anyone who enters, some since childhood, with deadly creatures that emerge at night. Throughout the series, the residents have tried to piece together the lore of this cursed town, who these creatures are, and ultimately, how to survive.

Harold Perrineau: ‘One of the giant moments of the season’

A core element of the Season 4 premiere is a significant shift in Boyd (Perrineau), who’s the town’s sheriff and mayor. He’s starting to lose hope of ever escaping or even surviving this mysterious place, specifically after Fatima’s (Pegah Ghafoori) baby turns out to be Smiley reborn.

That leads to an incredibly impactful scene, one of the best moments that we’ve gotten in the whole series, which begins when Boyd says to Donna (Saunders), “This place has been three steps ahead of us from the beginning. Just like you said, the game’s rigged. It doesn’t matter what we do, it doesn’t matter what we sacrifice.”

“Harold is so great to work with, first of all. … I always feel there’s an immediate rapport with him,” Saunders told Yahoo Canada. “We just play off each other.”

“So of course, there was the homework I did and the homework he did, but it’s so clear with Harold. It’s so clear what he’s playing, so you respond in kind.”

Then Kristi (Chloe Van Landschoot) has a very direct message for Boyd, after she just stitched up Elgin’s (Nathan D. Simmons) eye, which was pulled out by Sara (Avery Konrad), following the “Kimono Woman” manipulating Elgin.

“I’m going to need a little more from you than these things are going to live, so we’re all going to die. Because it doesn’t matter how many people I stitch back together, if they see you lose faith, then that’s when people hang themselves in the bathroom,” Kristi says.

Boyd’s son, Ellis (Corteon Moore), supports Kristi’s message to his dad, stressing that he’s the person everyone in the town can’t see fall apart, and the father-son duo share an emotional moment alone.

“I can’t do it anymore. … I’m falling apart,” Boys says. “Everythig I’ve done, every sacrific we’ve made, and if i can’t get you home then none of it matters.”

Ellis hugs his dad and says, “I know.”

“It’s one of the giant moments of the season, for me personally,” Perrineau told Yahoo Canada, getting emotional. “If you had to protect your family and you have done, literally, everything in your power, and then it just comes raging back, the kind of desperate hopelessness that you would feel is the thing that I had to contemplate as the actor, and it’s hard to shake that.”

“I’m really grateful that it’s on the screen, and I’ll never be able to explain [that] to my kids.”

This moment also speaks to how Perrineau, throughout all of From, has so brilliantly carried the weight of having to kill his wife, Abby (Lisa Ryder), and how he moves through the world with that grief, while also having to be such a strong anchor and support for everyone in the town, including his son.

“I think people do it, … this in life every day. And so, the thing for me is you have to … really bring the truth of that,” he said.

“It actually gives you a little bit of compassion for people who have to carry around this kind of weight. But I think it’s a thing that’s important. At the end of the day, he’s a man of service. He went into the military, not only to protect his country, but to protect his family. And to have to be the one to take away the giant part of his family, I don’t think you can shake it.”

But Perrineau teased that “diabolical” things will happen in From Season 4, where we’ll see people in the town in circumstances that “no one will ever be able to get over.”

The series From is the most compelling and well-crafted supernatural horror-thriller show to watch.
