OTTAWA, April 22 (Reuters) – Canada will not allow the United States to simply dictate the terms \u200cfor a scheduled review of the United States-Mexico-Canada \u200ctrade treaty, Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Mexico has already held \u200btwo rounds of talks with the United States about the review and will hold its first formal round of negotiations next month. No date has been announced for \u200cany talks involving \u2060Canada.<\/p>\n
The review is due to be complete by July 1.<\/p>\n
Former Quebec premier Jean Charest, who \u2060sits on a panel advising Carney on Canada-U.S. economic relations, told Radio-Canada that Washington was seeking “a lot of concessions \u200bfrom Canada” \u200bbefore talks began.<\/p>\n
“It’s not \u200ba case that the \u200cUnited States dictates the terms. We have a negotiation, we can come to a mutually successful outcome – it will take some time,” Carney told reporters.<\/p>\n
President Donald Trump last year slapped tariffs on key imports from Canada, prompting \u200cCanada to respond with countermeasures. Carney \u200bsays Trump’s actions mean Canada needs \u200bto diversify trade and \u200bcut its heavy reliance on the United \u200cStates.<\/p>\n
Canada’s chief trade negotiator with \u200bthe United \u200bStates, Janice Charette, said on Tuesday that she did not expect Canada and the U.S. to resolve \u200ball issues by \u200cJuly 1, but that would not mean the \u200bNorth American trade agreement would collapse.<\/p>\n
