Ontario Premier Doug Ford says the province has sold off a private jet it purchased for $28.9 million following an outcry. <\/p>\n

\u201cI can announce we sold the plane for the same price right back to Bombardier,\u201d Premier Doug Ford said at a Toronto event Wednesday. <\/p>\n

The comment comes days after Ford\u2019s office said he\u2019d sell off the plane. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s not yet clear what additional expenses the province incurred around the jet purchase, which was slammed by critics as being \u201cout of touch\u201d during an affordability crisis. <\/p>\n

Opposition Leader Marit Stiles has called on Ford to personally repay any additional costs around the jet purchase and sale. <\/p>\n

For his part, Ford said earlier this week he believes the jet was needed<\/a>, but that he\u2019d sell it off anyhow after hearing \u201cloud and clear\u201d from the public. <\/p>\n

Still, the premier said he believed a \u201cdouble standard\u201d was being applied to him, and that he\u2019s the most scrutinized politician in Canada<\/a>, including Prime Minister Mark Carney. <\/p>\n

Speaking with reporters at Queen\u2019s Park Tuesday, he described the case for the purchase, saying it was \u201ckind of embarrassing\u201d a province the size of Ontario doesn\u2019t have a government plane. <\/p>\n

The province does have a fleet of aircraft, but they are not always available for the premier\u2019s use and he often travels on commercial flights. <\/p>\n

Among other things, he suggested the jet could have been used to ferry around other cabinet ministers, and perhaps even to assist in rescues from Northern Ontario communities. <\/p>\n
