It may even reduce the risk of certain chronic health conditions, like high blood pressure and dementia.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-11457c\" class=\"body-graf\">But for many people, especially those used to scrolling on their phones for hours on end or riddle with anxious thoughts, the idea of sitting for a prolonged period and forcing yourself to think about nothing can seem impossible.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-cf01e9\" class=\"body-graf\">Of course, meditation isn&#8217;t about having no thoughts \u2014 in fact, a crucial part of the practice is acknowledging them and letting them go \u2014 but if you want some of its benefits without the deliberate mental part, there&#8217;s another exercise you can try.<\/p>\n<p>Mental Health Tip of the Day: Try Breathwork Instead of Meditation<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-709afb\" class=\"body-graf\">Stephanie Mansour, Start TODAY trainer, recommends starting with the breath for anyone struggling to get control of their thoughts. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9e6d5b\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/mind-body\/breathing-exercises-rcna47881\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Breathwork<\/a> may be the most accessible tool we have to calm ourselves down and recenter throughout the day. It can be done in your car, your office, or in line at the store and can have a huge effect on our mental state,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/diet-fitness\/moving-meditations-yoga-breathing-racing-thoughts-rcna82304\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mansour previously wrote<\/a> for TODAY.com.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ba3379\" class=\"body-graf\">Breathwork, originating in Eastern medicine, refers to specific breathing exercises to help the mind and body feel more calm,  <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/breathwork\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to Cleveland Clinic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Why It Matters<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4fee4e\" class=\"body-graf\">Breathwork (and meditation) can help alleviate stress, which, when chronic, can lead to a host of health problems.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-601a06\" class=\"body-graf\">Prolonged stress has been linked to: anxiety, depression, GI issues, chronic pain, cardiovascular disease, worsened sleep, and reduced memory and focus. <\/p>\n<p>How to Get Started<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-481d8e\" class=\"body-graf\">Mansour recommended starting with five easy breaths, counted with your fingers. Breathe in and out five times for five counts each \u2014 in total it should take less than 60 seconds. Focus on your breath and how you feel in your body as you do so.
