{"id":621915,"date":"2026-04-22T21:45:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T21:45:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/621915\/"},"modified":"2026-04-22T21:45:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T21:45:15","slug":"montreal-gaspesie-to-lose-provincial-ridings-after-ruling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/621915\/","title":{"rendered":"Montreal, Gasp\u00e9sie to lose provincial ridings after ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Montreal will have one less representative in Quebec\u2019s National Assembly following October\u2019s election after the Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected an attempt by the provincial government to delay a planned redrawing of electoral boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>The decision was delivery orally by Chief Justice Richard Wagner, who said only that a majority of the justices on Canada\u2019s highest court had voted to reject the Quebec government\u2019s appeal, with two judges dissenting.<\/p>\n<p>Wagner offered no reasons for the decision but said that a full written decision will come later.<\/p>\n<p>Quebec had sought to delay the introduction of a new electoral map that will remove one riding in eastern Montreal and one on the Gasp\u00e9 Peninsula while adding ridings in the Centre-du-Qu\u00e9bec and the Laurentians regions to account for population changes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/0306-city-electoral-map-1.png\" height=\"930\" width=\"1000\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Quebec\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/provincial-news\/provincial-politics\/quebec-electoral-commission-maintains-redrawn-electoral-map-despite-objections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Commission de la repr\u00e9sentation \u00e9lectorale<\/a> usually redraws the electoral map after every second general election, but in May 2024 the National Assembly passed a bill to postpone the redrawing process until after the next election, scheduled to take place in October 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The bill came after all four parties then represented in the legislature objected to the removal of the Gasp\u00e9 riding, arguing it would leave only two MNAs for the entire region, reducing its political power.<\/p>\n<p>A Superior Court court judge ruled in favour of the government, but last December Quebec\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/provincial_politics\/quebec-unconstitutionally-stopped-electoral-map-change-court-of-appeal-rules\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Court of Appeal ruled that the delay<\/a> was unconstitutional because it \u201csignificantly diluted\u201d the votes of people in the Centre-du-Qu\u00e9bec and Laurentides regions and was an \u201ceffort to circumvent the independent process provided for in the Election Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the new boundaries, the Gasp\u00e9 riding, whose population has fallen to more than 40 per cent below the provincial average, would be merged with the Bonaventure riding along Chaleur Bay. In Montreal, the Anjou and Lafontaine ridings would be merged.<\/p>\n<p>Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada, who met with <a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/provincial-news\/provincial-politics\/analysis-frechette-tries-to-breathe-life-into-an-old-government-will-it-fly-with-voters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Premier Christine Fr\u00e9chette <\/a>on Wednesday, said she was disappointed by the ruling, but she agrees with the premier that Montreal must work with the province\u2019s regions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMontreal is, of course, very, very disappointed by the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling. Losing a riding also, unfortunately, means losing political weight. That said, this means we must work more collaboratively with the Quebec government to ensure we strengthen the metropolis,\u201d she said. \u201cCurrently, the economic conflict lies outside the province of Quebec, and we must close ranks so that all of us \u2014 the city and the regions \u2014 can work together on the important issues of housing, homelessness, infrastructure and public transit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Opposition leader Ericka Alneus of Projet Montr\u00e9al also lamented the lost seat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA sad day for the city. When Montreal loses political clout \u2014 especially in the east \u2014 it loses a voice to defend very real issues: housing, economic development, infrastructure and the quality of life in our neighbourhoods.
