noopener\">artificial intelligence<\/a> power, pointing to what some experts say could be a \u201cdark pool\u201d of compute thousands of times larger than its public reports suggest.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), China has achieved 1,882 exaflops \u2013 short for exa floating-point operations per second \u2013 which translates to 1,882 quintillion, or billion billion, calculations per second.<\/p>\n<p>The figure is more than 6,000 times higher than the country\u2019s computing power as reflected in the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/science\/article\/3180337\/no-sign-chinas-new-supercomputers-among-worlds-top500?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Top500 list<\/a>, one of the few available benchmarks for comparing China\u2019s supercomputing progress with other countries, especially the United States.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">While the two are not directly comparable, and the Germany-based ranking of the world\u2019s fastest supercomputers is often seen as an underestimate, the latest data released by the MIIT on Tuesday suggests China\u2019s computing power is rising fast.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Unlike China, the US \u2013 which dominates the Top500 \u2013 does not publish a single national figure for AI
