{"id":622987,"date":"2026-04-23T09:30:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T09:30:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/622987\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T09:30:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T09:30:12","slug":"snohetta-creates-cloud-like-milan-installation-for-usm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/622987\/","title":{"rendered":"Sn\u00f8hetta creates cloud-like Milan installation for USM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/usm\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">USM&#8217;<\/a>s classic Haller storage system forms the framework for a &#8220;breathing&#8221; textile membrane that cocoons visitors to this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/milan-design-week\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milan design week<\/a> installation, developed in collaboration with architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/snohetta\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sn\u00f8hetta<\/a> and artist Annabelle Schneider.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usm.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Swiss furniture brand<\/a> partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snohetta.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sn\u00f8hetta<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/annabelleschneider.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Schneider<\/a> to create the multi-sensory Renaissance of the Real installation, which invites visitors to step away from the digital realm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2319499 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/snohetta-usm-rennaisance-of-the-real_dezeen_2364_col_12-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Renaissance of the Real installation by Sn\u00f8hetta and Annabelle Schneider for USM\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>USM&#8217;s Renaissance of the Real installation was designed by Sn\u00f8hetta and Annabelle Schneider<\/p>\n<p>Sn\u00f8hetta used the storage system to construct a rigid architectural skeleton around Schneider&#8217;s soft, textile membrane, which is inflated using a system of fans. This causes it to gently expand and contract like a breathing organism in a bid to promote a sense of calm and relaxation.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted in the garden of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazioneluigirovati.org\/en\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fondazione Luigi Rovati<\/a> museum, the installation is the latest iteration of Schneider&#8217;s exploration into transformative spaces designed to evoke comfort, belonging and well-being.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2319502 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/snohetta-usm-rennaisance-of-the-real_dezeen_2364_col_15-852x1235.jpg\" alt=\"Inflated arm resting on a USM shelf\" width=\"1630\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>It consists of a cloud-like &#8220;breathing&#8221; membrane<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Renaissance of the Real is my response to a moment where reality is increasingly dominated by speed and images,&#8221; the artist explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Instead of producing another product, this installation is an immersive permission \u2013 a place where the structural clarity of USM Haller holds a breathing environment that invites us to reconnect with our bodies and each other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2319492 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/snohetta-usm-rennaisance-of-the-real_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Inflatable pushing through USM shelving\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The membrane is held up by USM&#8217;s Haller storage system<\/p>\n<p>The structure for the installation is constructed entirely using USM&#8217;s Haller storage system, which is customisable using a combination of tubes, ball-shaped connectors and a range of panels, doors and drawers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The USM grid is both an anchor and an invitation,&#8221; said Sn\u00f8hetta&#8217;s director for interior architecture, Anne-Rachel Schiffmann.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our design explores the tension between the gridded and the amorphous, creating a permeable boundary that filters the outside world and draws attention inward to light, nature and the quiet presence of others.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/04\/15\/milan-design-week-2026-highlights-preview-installations-exhibitions-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/marni-cucchi-milan-design-week-1-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Marni x Cucchi\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Twenty-nine unmissable exhibitions and installations at Milan design week 2026\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The interior contrasts the geometric precision of USM&#8217;s units with Schneider&#8217;s amorphous Bubble pillows, which are playfully stacked or draped over the furniture to create a casual seating environment.<\/p>\n<p>Artist and audio engineer Devon Turnbull, also known as <a href=\"https:\/\/ojas.nyc\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OJAS<\/a>, will host daily vinyl listening sessions within the space.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2319490 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/snohetta-usm-rennaisance-of-the-real_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Inside of Renaissance of the Real installation by Sn\u00f8hetta and Annabelle Schneider for USM\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Sunlight streams in through the permeable white walls<\/p>\n<p>New York-based Schneider previously developed an installation called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/eventsguide\/2024\/05\/breathe-with-me-nyc-2024\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Breathe With Me<\/a>, which debuted at NYCxDesign and featured a similar womb-like atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>Sn\u00f8hetta is a global, transdisciplinary practice that often works with brands on projects aimed at connecting architecture with landscape and human experience.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2319498 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/snohetta-usm-rennaisance-of-the-real_dezeen_2364_col_11-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Renaissance of the Real installation by Sn\u00f8hetta and Annabelle Schneider for USM\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The installation is housed in the courtyard of the Fondazione Luigi Rovati museum<\/p>\n<p>The studio recently completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/03\/13\/glasshouse-theatre-snohetta-blight-rayner\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a theatre in Australia featuring an undulating glass facade<\/a> and designed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/02\/18\/qasr-alhokm-metro-station-snohetta\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a metro station in Saudi Arabia<\/a> that is topped with a curving mirrored canopy.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere at Milan design week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/04\/20\/aesop-apose-factory-light-milan-design-week\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">skincare brand Aesop presented an installation<\/a> featuring its first-ever lighting designs, while IKEA invited designers and chefs to create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/04\/20\/ikea-food-for-thought-exhibition-milan-design-week-video\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a series of food-focused domestic spaces<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"USM&#8217;s classic Haller storage system forms the framework for a &#8220;breathing&#8221;
