{"id":623799,"date":"2026-04-23T18:09:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T18:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/623799\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T18:09:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T18:09:08","slug":"ford-government-passes-budget-that-changes-foi-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/623799\/","title":{"rendered":"Ford government passes budget that changes FOI laws"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ford governments budget bill has passed after it faced stiff opposition regarding changes to Freedom of Information legislation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Ford government has passed a spring budget that includes provisions to let the premier and his cabinet ministers keep all their office records secret. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The spring budget changes Freedom of Information laws retroactively as well, meaning Ontario Premier Doug Ford would no longer have to comply with a court order to release his cellphone records. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The government used its majority to fast-track the bill and skip public hearings. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Votes were counted in the legislature as citizens in the gallery loudly chanted \u201cF-O-I\u201d to protest the legislation. It passed 57-33. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cp24.com\/local\/toronto\/2026\/03\/13\/ontario-moves-to-keep-documents-from-premier-and-cabinet-minister-offices-secret\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FOI changes<\/a> were first announced back in March and followed the loss of a court battle over access to Ford\u2019s phone records.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The premier regularly gives out his personal cellphone number to the public and uses the device to conduct government business. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A court ruled in January that Ford must release logs of government-related calls made on his cellphone to comply with a Freedom of Information Request filed by Global News and supported by the Information and Privacy Commissioner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Ford refused to release the records, citing confidentiality with constituents, even though FOI requests are already redacted to hide personal information. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The government called a late-night session at Queen\u2019s Park Thursday, paving the way for them to give the legislation a final vote Thursday, the last day the government is in session before breaking to spend a week with constituents. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Opposition parties at Queen\u2019s Park have expressed outrage over the legislation, pointing out that the public only learned about problems \u2014 like the Greenbelt scandal, the government accidentally releasing dozens of prisoners and other missteps \u2014 through FOI laws. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cBy lunchtime today, it will be law and it will be retroactive.
