Police are inviting Mississauga and Brampton residents to learn more about their new gunshot detector and security camera technology.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s called the Community Safety Response Platform (CSRP), and is equipped with an Acoustic Detection Device that can pick up gunshots 500 metres away, an automated licence plate reader and pan tilt zoom security cameras.<\/p>\n
Police say alerts from the platforms can reach dispatch before 911 calls, and that the platforms are an investigative tool that may be used in residential and commercial areas \u201cto support police response to serious incidents, based on identified risk and community needs.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2018These units are designed to quickly alert police following serious incidents and to provide officers with timely information to support response and investigation efforts,\u201d Peel police said in a statement on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Police say the CSRP is designed \u201cwith a privacy-first and human-rights-based approach,\u201d and doesn\u2019t have any facial recognition technology. The platforms will only be deployed \u201cwhen a reported incident meets Peel Police\u2019s risk assessment threshold,\u201d and consent is required from property and business owners.<\/p>\n
The platforms don\u2019t continuously record audio, and data will only be saved \u201cwhen operationally required.\u201d All other data auto-deleted within 48 hours, police say.<\/p>\n
Police will be holding both an in-person and online information session to educate the public about the platforms, and Mississauga and Brampton residents are urged to attend to learn more, ask questions, and provide feedback.<\/p>\n
The first info session is on Monday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Emil V. Kolb Centre in Mississauga, with an online-only session on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.<\/p>\n
