{"id":624556,"date":"2026-04-24T01:52:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T01:52:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/624556\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T01:52:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T01:52:15","slug":"meta-to-cut-10-of-staff-as-it-pours-billions-into-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/624556\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta to cut 10% of staff as it pours billions into AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobvo2mw003c28npdlmdhvp7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meta said on Thursday it plans to lay off roughly 10% of its workforce, or about 8,000 people, the latest in a string of tech industry layoffs fueled in part by artificial intelligence.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobvp8c200043b6ql6apwss0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The company is also closing around 6,000 open roles, Janelle Gale, Meta\u2019s chief people officer, wrote in a memo published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-04-23\/meta-tells-staff-it-will-cut-10-of-jobs-in-push-for-efficiency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> that Meta confirmed to CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobvp8c300053b6qhw5kcaiw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The layoffs will go into effect on May 20.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobvp8c300063b6qu7yxm7dd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re doing this as part of our continued effort to run the company more efficiently and to allow us to offset the other investments we\u2019re making,\u201d Gale wrote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobvp8c300073b6qj1brz90p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meta, along with other tech giants, has been on an aggressive AI spending spree. The company spent $72.2 billion on capital expenditures in 2025, or costs related to data centers and other AI infrastructure. That number is expected to climb to at least $115 billion in 2026, Meta said in its January earnings report.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobvp8c300083b6q95onwoye@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The company has also been splurging on talent for its superintelligence lab and has acquired buzzy AI startups like Moltbook and Manus as part of its ongoing efforts to compete with OpenAI and others.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobvp8c300093b6q0ufag6km@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meta (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/META\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">META<\/a>) shares were down more than 2% on Thursday afternoon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobvp8c3000a3b6qtczsufkt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            More and more companies have trimmed their workforces over the past year, pointing to what they describe as AI\u2019s ability to improve efficiency. Amazon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/28\/tech\/amazon-layoffs-ai\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in January it would lay off 16,000 workers, its second large-scale layoffs in three months, emphasizing the need for efficiency. And fintech firm Block\u2019s announcement in February that it would lay off 40% of its workforce, more than 4,000 people, came with a stark warning that more companies would follow suit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobvp8c3000b3b6qpcfpnarr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg hinted at the start of this year that the company, which has invested heavily in AI, could see workforce changes because of the technology. On Meta\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/s21.q4cdn.com\/399680738\/files\/doc_financials\/2025\/q4\/META-Q4-2025-Earnings-Call-Transcript.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">January earnings call<\/a>, he called 2026 \u201cthe year that AI starts to dramatically change the way that we work.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobvp8c3000c3b6qwyn91w4n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re starting to see projects that used to require big teams now be accomplished by a single very talented person,\u201d Zuckerberg said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobvp8c3000d3b6q8ocofo23@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meta said it will offer affected US employees 16 weeks of base pay along with two weeks for every year of employment, adding that international packages will be similar.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmobvpdoi000g3b6qbqamoe2i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Like many big tech companies, Meta <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/03\/14\/tech\/meta-layoffs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eliminated<\/a> tens of thousands of jobs in 2022 and 2023, reductions that were largely attributed to right-sizing after Covid-era spikes in usage and hiring.
