{"id":624576,"date":"2026-04-24T02:07:17","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T02:07:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/624576\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T02:07:17","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T02:07:17","slug":"alberta-premier-skeptical-of-a-southern-route-for-a-b-c-pipeline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/624576\/","title":{"rendered":"Alberta premier \u2018skeptical\u2019 of a southern route for a B.C. pipeline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alberta Premier <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/danielle-smith\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Danielle Smith<\/a> was asked on Thursday about the possibility of a southern route for a new <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/pipeline\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pipeline<\/a> from Alberta to B.C.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This follows a report that the federal government prefers a southern route, rather than a northern one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think people are forgetting the discussion that happened with Trans Mountain in the first place,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, one of the big discussions was around \u2026 how many additional tankers could go through a very congested port. And there was some discussion around it being 30 for a month. So now we\u2019re already talking about increasing that with the Trans Mountain pipeline, looking like it\u2019s going to get the go-ahead to go out to another 360,000 barrels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess the question would be, in a very congested port like that, is there an appetite for a doubling once again of that amount of traffic? And so that\u2019s why I\u2019m a bit skeptical that that would be \u2026 the appropriate route.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Smith said they are looking for a route that would end at a deep-water port, with little navigation needed for channels and a rapid way of getting to the Asian markets.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767930311_275_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you'll never miss the day's top stories.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you&#8217;ll never miss the day&#8217;s top stories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when you look further up the coast, you can cut three days off, transatlantic or transpacific transit,\u201d Smith added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo that\u2019s why we still favour some of the sites where you would get a deep-water port.
