{"id":626152,"date":"2026-04-24T19:16:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T19:16:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/626152\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T19:16:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T19:16:08","slug":"manitoba-health-officials-report-25-more-measles-cases-as-province-remains-national-hotspot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/626152\/","title":{"rendered":"Manitoba health officials report 25 more measles cases as province remains national hotspot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Manitoba health officials are reporting more than two dozen newly confirmed measles cases as the province continues to be Canada&#8217;s hot spot for the infectious disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.mb.ca\/health\/publichealth\/diseases\/measles.html#update\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:The latest provincial data;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">The latest provincial data<\/a>, which goes up to April 18 and was updated on Friday, shows Manitoba has recorded 23 more confirmed cases and two more probable cases since last week&#8217;s update.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Friday&#8217;s update puts the provincial tally at 497 confirmed infections and 70 probable cases so far this year. That&#8217;s a total of 567 cases \u2014 nearly 63 per cent higher than the total case count for all of 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There have been 80 confirmed cases and five probable cases so far in April, the new figures say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Manitoba has the highest number of measles cases of any Canadian province, accounting for over 60 per cent of all cases in the country, <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/health-infobase.canada.ca\/measles-rubella\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:federal data shows;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">federal data shows<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This week, health officials sent out several bulletins warning that members of the public may have been exposed to measles at locations in southern Manitoba, including the Children&#8217;s Hospital emergency department, a school and transit bus routes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Anyone who was at the Portage District General Hospital emergency department in Portage la Prairie at the following times is encouraged to monitor for symptoms:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">April 17 from 1:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">April 18 from 1:10 a.m. to 3:25 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">April 18 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The province warned Winnipeggers may have been exposed to the highly contagious disease at the following locations and times:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Winnipeg Transit Route D16 (Academy-Notre Dame) on April 16 from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Winnipeg Transit Route F7 (St. Anne\u2019s-Provencher) on April 16 from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Victor Wyatt School on April 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Teen Stop Jeunesse on April 16 from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">People who were at the Health Sciences Centre Children\u2019s Hospital emergency department in Winnipeg on April 15 from 11 a.m. to 3:50 p.m. and April 18 from 11:05 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. are asked to monitor for symptoms, the province said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Recent exposure sites are <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.mb.ca\/health\/publichealth\/diseases\/measles-exposures.html#exposures\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:updated on the province&#039;s website.;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">updated on the province&#8217;s website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There is no cure for measles and treatment focuses on symptom relief.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Symptoms typically appear seven to 21 days after exposure. They can include a cough and fever, a runny nose and conjunctivitis (pink eye).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">People who contract measles may get white spots on the inside of their mouth and a red rash, which can be painful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">People with measles are infectious from four days before the rash appears to four days after it appears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The illness spreads through droplets that form in the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks.
