Jordie MacKay says he isn\u2019t much of a golfer but has gotten into the swing of things in a Surrey garage.<\/p>\n
Last June he opened Studio Swing, a golf simulator he originally built for his father\u2019s use at his house in Fleetwood.<\/p>\n
Now, golfers can book the space online, Airbnb style.<\/p>\n
Notable is the massive screen that absorbs drives and chips hit into it.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a 250-inch screen, the biggest screen for golf in the Lower Mainland, from all the ones we\u2019ve seen,\u201d MacKay raved.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wanted to create something that makes people go, \u2018Oh wow!\u2019 as soon as they come through the door, with a screen the size of the whole wall.\u201d<\/p>\n
The high-tech simulator features 4K graphics, ProTee VX launch monitor system and choice of more than 1,500 golf courses to \u201cplay\u201d indoors, Surrey tracks among them (Northview, Morgan Creek, etc.).<\/p>\n
Groups of golfers or solo players can chill on a couch, store beverages in a fridge, play a round or just analyze swings for $40 an hour and up, rental clubs available.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been a hit,\u201d MacKay said. \u201cWe\u2019re booked every day \u2014 not booked solid every day, but we\u2019ve had a booking every day now for the last five months. We\u2019ve easily got over 300 clients, up over 500 bookings. I\u2019m wanting to open up a second location probably come this winter.\u201d<\/p>\n
MacKay, who works in film business transportation, said he spent two months building Studio Swing, on 92 Avenue in Surrey.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m actually not a big golf guy,\u201d he admitted with a laugh. \u201cFunny thing is, my dad and my brother have always been huge golf guys, and I tag along for birthdays, Father\u2019s Day, whatever. I\u2019ll drive the cart, I\u2019ll drink the beer. You\u2019ll get nine or 10 holes out of me before I just become exclusive to driving, kind of thing.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut with this system,\u201d he added, \u201cI know everything about it backwards, inwards and outside, to troubleshoot and set it up, all that.\u201d<\/p>\n
The home-based business rivals golf simulation setups at Surrey\u2019s Par4 Kitchen & Bar and Happy Gilmore Golf Lounge in Burnaby.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re unique because we\u2019re in this garage,\u201d MacKay said. \u201cIt\u2019s all automated, people go online to book, it puts in the information, which course they want, sets the heat to whatever temperature, and they get a door-lock code 10 minutes before they get here.<\/p>\n
\u201cTen minutes after you leave, it all resets,\u201d he added. \u201cI come in to do the garbage and recycling and try and mingle with the clients on the weekends when I have time, but for the most part it\u2019s just a private experience for people to enjoy however they want.\u201d<\/p>\n
Studio Swing is open until midnight for general users, 1 a.m. for members.<\/p>\n
The high-energy MacKay says he\u2019s building a similar golf simulator on Granville Street in Vancouver for client who visited and loved Studio Swing. That job is contracted for close to $80,000, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s fun building them,\u201d raved MacKay, who grew up in Newton and moved with family to Fleetwood.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re making over $10,000 a month just on the single bay, which is great but not my intention at all,\u201d he said candidly. \u201cWhen I first started this, I said that if I could pay this thing off in a year, a year and a half, I\u2019d be happy, because I built it for my dad.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe very first day I opened, I had three bookings and it just never stopped. We hit that $2,500-a-month mark within, like, two weeks. I thought, maybe that\u2019s kind of a fluke, and then it doubled and doubled. It\u2019s busy.\u201d<\/p>\n
