Even during a tough season, Jake\u00a0DeBrusk\u00a0is able to find new ways to grow both as a player\u00a0and as a member of this team.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
With how challenging it can be to lose more games than win,\u00a0DeBrusk\u00a0has shifted his focus to not just the final result, but the process of the group, the health of the\u00a0team’s\u00a0culture, and mentoring the youth as they navigate their first seasons in the NHL. Through that, he believes he has not only learned more about his teammates, but about himself as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cYou try to take lessons, especially for me, going\u00a0through this for the first time with many other guys,\u201d\u00a0DeBrusk\u00a0said. \u201cYou learn a lot about yourself with these moments, you learn a lot about\u00a0your\u00a0teammates,\u00a0and I think there\u2019s something that is a positive out of it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
DeBrusk\u00a0believes that it is important for veterans to step up in those moments and be a steady presence in the locker room to not only help facilitate a positive environment in the locker room, but also teach them to take advantage of the ice time,\u00a0and roster spots, while understanding that it won\u2019t always be like this. This ensures that young players are not getting deterred by mistakes made on the\u00a0ice and\u00a0gives them leeway to test their skills.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s\u00a0lessons in every game. For me,\u00a0not\u00a0necessarily forget about the year, but to understand that this is not normal, and to focus on yourself and your game, and just try stuff. This is like the open field,\u201d\u00a0DeBrusk\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The eagerness to learn and natural excitement that the young players have brought to the group\u00a0has\u00a0been a key part of bringing the team\u00a0together and\u00a0laying\u00a0out a new foundation that will continue to grow each season.\u00a0DeBrusk\u00a0highlighted how this injection of youth has been beneficial for veteran players as well.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe new guys coming in, with just their energy, they\u2019re excited, they don\u2019t care where they just got traded, they\u2019re playing in the NHL and they want to win,\u201d\u00a0DeBrusk\u00a0said. \u201cSometimes the basic aspect of that,\u00a0as you get older, it\u2019s nice to see that again.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
DeBrusk\u00a0enjoys keeping things light during the\u00a0season and\u00a0tries his best to approach each day with a positive attitude, regardless of what the results show on the scoreboard. Especially with the younger players, having moments of fun and\u00a0humour\u00a0served as a great bonding tool.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel like you have to have a little bit of\u00a0fun in\u00a0there when you earn it,\u201d\u00a0DeBrusk\u00a0said. \u201cI try to have a couple inside jokes with every guy, but these young guys are funny.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
There has been a notable shift in the Canucks locker room in the latter half of the\u00a0season;\u00a0changes that have slowly begun to\u00a0reflect\u00a0on the ice as well.\u00a0The team\u00a0has\u00a0been sticking up for\u00a0one another and\u00a0playing\u00a0hard\u00a0for each other.\u00a0DeBrusk\u00a0has felt that the team’s effort in that area has been\u00a0commendable and\u00a0emphasizes how it is an important building block of creating\u00a0a\u00a0good culture.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAll good teams are tight. All good teams are doing that for each other, and it\u2019s not like you have to go out there and try to kill people or have to fight every single game, but when the situation presents itself, we all saw guys were no hesitation going in,\u201d\u00a0DeBrusk\u00a0said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
