Photo: World Agri-Tech Summit\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 125px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 125\/50;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                Artificial intelligence tools are advancing fast, but Prairie farmers still make the final call<\/p>\n<p class=\"gfm-article-sneak-peak-component--post-text\">Artificial intelligence is moving beyond recommendations in agriculture, but Prairie agronomists say farmers still make the final decisions in the field. <\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Canada also imports other products such as NPK blends, ammonium nitrate and calcium ammonium nitrate.<\/p>\n<p>The phosphate comes from the United States, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.producer.com\/tag\/nitrogen-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nitrogen products<\/a> originate from the U.S. and the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada produces nitrogen and potash but does not produce any phosphate and relies on imports,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/fertilizercanada.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Fertilizer Canada<\/a> spokesperson Kayla Fitzpatrick said in an email.<\/p>\n<p>The nitrogen and potash are produced in Western Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to supply chain challenges of getting bulk shipments of fertilizer across the country, it is easier to import fertilizer into Eastern Canada,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Why it Matters: Fertilizer is the most costly crop input on many farmers.<\/p>\n<p>Shipping restrictions in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.producer.com\/crops\/phosphate-prices-not-soaring-as-much-as-urea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a> are causing major supply disruptions in the United States and Brazil, the world\u2019s two largest fertilizer importers, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/ag.purdue.edu\/commercialag\/home\/resource\/2026\/04\/middle-east-conflict-revives-concerns-over-fertilizer-dependence-in-the-u-s-and-brazil\/?utm_source=delivra&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=20260420_Fertilizer%20U.S.%20and%20Brazil&amp;utm_id=49412914\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">analysis<\/a> by Purdue University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ag.purdue.edu\/commercialag\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Center for Commercial Agriculture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The strait carries up to 30 per cent of global fertilizer shipments. The Gulf countries are the largest regional exporter of urea and ammonia and the second-largest regional exporter of DAP and MAP.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. imported 13 per cent of its nitrogen fertilizer, 16 per cent of its phosphate and 95 per cent of its potash in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States has a strong domestic fertilizer industry, supplying nearly 60 per cent of its demand for the primary micronutrients,\u201d stated the Purdue report authored by Joana Colussi and Michael Langemeier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven so, it remains exposed to major supply disruptions and sharp increases in fertilizer prices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brazil is even more dependent on foreign supplies, importing 95 per cent of its nitrogen fertilizer, 72 per cent of its phosphate and 96 per cent of its potash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrazil does not have a strong domestic fertilizer industry, despite the scale of its agricultural production,\u201d stated the report.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil and the U.S. both released plans in 2022 to reduce their dependence on imported fertilizers after the Russia-Ukraine war disrupted global supplies. However, their domestic production of NPK has changed little since then.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Brazil\u2019s imports have risen, reaching a record 43.3 million tonnes in 2025, up from 39.3 million tonnes in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrazil remains in a riskier position because import dependence is high across all three primary macronutrients, and domestic production has not kept pace with rising record demand,\u201d stated the report.<\/p>\n<p>The soybean fertilizer purchasing window for the 2026-27 crop season is happening now in Brazil, while in the U.S. Midwest, much of the fertilizer for this crop year had already been purchased and\/or applied last fall before the conflict began.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite these different impacts, both Brazil and the United States should step up efforts to expand domestic fertilizer production and reduce their exposure to external shocks,\u201d stated the Purdue analysis.<\/p>\n<p>Australia is also heavily dependent on imported fertilizer, according to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commbankresearch.com.au\/apex\/ResearchArticleViewV2?id=a0NOa00000JYxifMAD&amp;un=sean.pratt@producer.com&amp;tk=YTBOT2EwMDAwMEpZeGlmTUFEOnNlYW4ucHJhdHRAcHJvZHVjZXIuY29t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">special report<\/a> by Dennis Voznesenski, agricultural economist with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.<\/p>\n<p>An average of 87 per cent of the country\u2019s nitrogen fertilizer, 68 per cent of its phosphate and 100 per cent of its potash fertilizer was imported between 2019 and 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The Middle East supplied 64 per cent of Australia\u2019s urea and 33 per cent of its DAP and MAP in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Many Australian farmers had sufficient fertilizer for the winter crop planting that is happening right now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, wheat crops need urea post-planting through until flowering in September to maximize yield potential,\u201d said Voznesenski.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing flowering, further urea will be needed to increase the protein content of the wheat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It will also be needed prior to canola flowering around September.<\/p>\n<p>The winter crop harvest will begin in late October and should be finished by early January .<\/p>\n<p>Voznesenski is forecasting a nine to 25 per cent reduction in Australian wheat production, a 17 to 32 per cent drop in barley and a 10 to 31 per cent decline in canola output for the 2026-27 crop compared to 2025-26.<\/p>\n<p>That is based on a 15 to 45 per cent reduction in urea application this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the fertilizer export disruption lasts past mid-year and well into the Southern Hemisphere\u2019s grain growing season, global markets should begin pricing in reduced production potential via higher prices,\u201d he said in his report.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/bell-twp.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-293859 lazyload\" style=\"width:40px\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"gfm-dialog-embed-description\">Breaking ag news stories and commodities markets snapshots delivered daily right to your inbox!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"SASKATOON \u2014 Turmoil in the Middle East is reviving concerns over fertilizer dependence in key grain export markets.&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":627169,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[45,49,48,100234,235039,202944,109981,235040,105097,235041],"class_list":["post-627168","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-business","tag-business","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-fertilizer","tag-fertilizer-market","tag-iran-war","tag-nitrogen","tag-phosphate","tag-potash","tag-urea"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/627168","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=627168"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/627168\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/627169"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=627168"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=627168"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=627168"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
