{"id":627610,"date":"2026-04-25T11:33:20","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T11:33:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/627610\/"},"modified":"2026-04-25T11:33:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T11:33:20","slug":"ttc-signal-workers-could-go-on-strike-weeks-before-fifa-world-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/627610\/","title":{"rendered":"TTC signal workers could go on strike weeks before FIFA World Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The TTC\u2019s 700 electrical and signal workers could be locked out or walk off the job weeks before the start of the FIFA World Cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttc.ca\/news\/2026\/April\/Statement-from-TTC-CEO-Mandeep-S-Lali-on-negotiations-between-the-TTC-and-CUPE-Local-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ttc.ca\/news\/2026\/April\/Statement-from-TTC-CEO-Mandeep-S-Lali-on-negotiations-between-the-TTC-and-CUPE-Local-2\">On Friday,<\/a> the TTC asked the Ontario Ministry of Labour for a \u201cno-board\u201d report. Once issued, it would begin a 17-day countdown on a possible job action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The request came after CUPE Local 2, which represents the TTC\u2019s communications, electrical and signal workers, said members voted in favour of strike action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cupelocal2.com\/ttc-electrical-and-trades-workers-deliver-strong-strike-mandate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/cupelocal2.com\/ttc-electrical-and-trades-workers-deliver-strong-strike-mandate\/\">According to a union news release earlier this month<\/a>, the key issues on the bargaining table are wages and employer concession demands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">TTC CEO Mandeep Lali said making the request \u201cwas the best way to encourage meaningful, good-faith negotiations.\u201d Usually, unions ask for a no-board report during bargaining.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cRequesting a no-board report creates the structural foundation to reach an agreement before the event kicks off in Toronto on June 12,\u201d Lali said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He noted that the TTC remains committed to providing uninterrupted transit service during the World Cup, but the agency has \u201crobust contingency plans\u201d in place if there is a labour disruption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe remain fully committed to reaching a new collective agreement as we have been since January 2026, and we are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to negotiate with CUPE, working to ensure we do not have a labour disruption,\u201d Lali said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The TTC workers\u2019 contract expired on March 31. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The union questioned the TTC\u2019s latest move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we\u2019ve seen from the TTC so far is escalation, including moving to conciliation before meaningful negotiations even began and requesting a no-board report today, triggering a countdown toward a strike or lockout,\u201d a CUPE spokesperson said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThat raises serious questions about whether the focus is on bargaining or applying pressure to reach a deal ahead of the World Cup, at a time when our members are facing a cost-of-living crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The TTC\u2019s 700 electrical and signal workers could be locked out or walk off the job weeks before&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":627611,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[712,43,44,41,39,42,40],"class_list":["post-627610","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headlines","tag-apple-news","tag-headlines","tag-news","tag-top-news","tag-top-stories","tag-topnews","tag-topstories"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/627610","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=627610"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/627610\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/627611"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=627610"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=627610"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=627610"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
