{"id":628362,"date":"2026-04-25T19:55:22","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T19:55:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/628362\/"},"modified":"2026-04-25T19:55:22","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T19:55:22","slug":"anti-doug-ford-rallies-take-place-across-ontario-to-protest-osap-foi-changes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/628362\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-Doug Ford rallies take place across Ontario to protest OSAP, FOI changes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Demonstrations are taking place across Ontario to protest against Premier Doug Ford and several of the province&#8217;s recent controversial measures, including changes to freedom of information (FOI) laws and OSAP grants.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of people gathered at Queen&#8217;s Park with signs and umbrellas despite the rainy weather, chanting &#8220;Doug Ford always lies, bring back FOI&#8221; and &#8220;no jets at Billy Bishop.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Protester Doug Oliver said he joined the rally Saturday because residents are unhappy with the premier&#8217;s actions, which he called &#8220;anti-democratic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he is amending the [FOI] act in order to prevent people from accessing things like his cellphone records, then that tells me he has something to hide,\u201d said Oliver.<\/p>\n<p>On a website titled &#8220;Protesting Doug Ford,&#8221; 55 protests are said to take place in various municipalities across the province, including Ottawa, Scarborough, Sudbury and Waterloo.<\/p>\n<p>The website urges residents to write to their local member of provincial parliament to initiate a no-confidence vote to &#8220;force Ford to resign.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Doug Ford is tabling legislation that the people do not agree with and that hurts Ontarians,&#8221; the website states. &#8220;He\u2019s making so many changes within a short time and against the wishes of the people that it quietly erodes democracy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Woman holding yellow sign and umbrella at protest.\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1777146920_313_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.3333333333333333\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Hundreds gathered at Queen&#8217;s Park in Toronto on Saturday to protest various issues, including the recent changes to freedom of information laws that shield the premier and his cabinet. (Naama Weingarten\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p>Saturday&#8217;s protests follow similar demonstrations that were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/anti-doug-ford-rally-toronto-9.7146045\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">held across the province last month. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the Ford government&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/budget-bill-final-vote-9.7174306\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">controversial omnibus budget bill<\/a> received royal assent from Ontario&#8217;s Lieutenant Governor \u2014 meaning changes within it are now officially law.<\/p>\n<p>The budget passed a vote at Queen&#8217;s Park on Thursday, following heated debate and chants of &#8220;FOI&#8221; by opposition party members.<\/p>\n<p>Changes from the budget will include a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ford-ticket-resale-price-cap-ontario-9.7135950\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cap to resale ticket prices<\/a>, an introduction of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ontario-remove-hst-new-homes-9.7141269\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one year HST rebate<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ontario-ford-changing-foi-rules-9.7127884\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a retroactive FOI law<\/a> that would shield the premier and his cabinet ministers from public access to documents.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario&#8217;s Transportation Minister also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/toronto-island-airport-9.7175120\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">introduced a bill this week<\/a> that would allow the province to take over Toronto&#8217;s role with Billy Bishop Airport and is part of a push to expand the island airport to include jets.<\/p>\n<p>Waterloo protesters challenge Ford&#8217;s healthcare stance<\/p>\n<p>Amidst chants of &#8220;hey ho, Doug Ford has got to go,&#8221; hundreds gathered at Waterloo Town Square with many protesting changes to the healthcare system.<\/p>\n<p>Protester Andrea Pentz said she came to the rally to protest the province to &#8220;stick to the basics&#8221; and fund the existing healthcare system.<\/p>\n<p>She said she didn&#8217;t realize how bad the system was struggling until after her mother went to hospital, and eventually died, a few months ago.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m going into my older years and I&#8217;m afraid,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Seeing it first hand, its like the care will not be there for me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"People standing around in a crowd holding up signs\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1777146920_690_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.7607891491985204\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Hundreds gathered with flags and colourful signs at an anti-Ford demonstration in Waterloo, Ont. (Diego Pizarro\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p>Waterloo resident Dave Minnes asked the premier to think about the needs of the common man.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Social programs are very important, they affect education, they affect medicine,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Mr. Ford seems to push things to the people that have a lot more funds than people who don&#8217;t.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrators cheered as NDP Leader Marit Stiles spoke at the protest, saying public healthcare is the \u201cbackbone\u201d of Canadian society and needed more funding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely essential, and is part of who we are as Canadians, that we put patients and people ahead of profits,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Person holding up sign against privatized healthcare with architectural structure in background\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1777146921_586_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.3333333333333333\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Many protesters in Waterloo urged the province to increase funding and supports to the public healthcare system. (Diego Pizarro\/CBC)Toronto protesters brave rain to rally against Ford<\/p>\n<p>Feelings at the protest were \u201cboiling over\u201d given the many changes brought about by the province, said post-secondary student Gurneet Singh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hate the rain, but I hate Doug Ford more right now,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s people power and I think it\u2019s really powerful that all these people are showing up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She says the number of concerns being raised by residents could mean Ford \u201chas a rude awakening ahead,\u201d especially when it comes to the next provincial election.<\/p>\n<p>Oshawa resident Ethan Eastwood said he\u2019s worried about the province\u2019s lack of transparency  given the \u201cshameful\u201d changes to FOI laws.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"People hold banner at protest\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1777146922_912_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.3333333333333333\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Protesters at Queen&#8217;s Park Saturday said they were frustrated by Doug Ford&#8217;s recent protest, and sale, of a $28.9 million private jet. (Naama Weingarten\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t get to know what [Ford] is doing, unless he decides to tell us,\u201d said Eastwood. \u201cI don\u2019t trust him to be honest. I don\u2019t trust him to be transparent and forthcoming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he\u2019s worried that the next elected provincial government may not reverse changes to FOI laws, or when that might even become a possibility.<\/p>\n<p>Eastwood also raised concerns with Ford\u2019s recent claims that the province\u2019s $28.9 million private jet had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ontario-doug-ford-private-jet-9.7173060\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sold back to Bombardier<\/a> \u2014 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/doug-ford-jet-sell-9.7169704\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">decision that was made<\/a> following immense public backlash over the purchase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know that I believe him and I would love to see those receipts,\u201d he said, adding that will now be impossible without FOI requests.<\/p>\n<p>Province cutting &#8216;unnecessary red tape&#8217; to &#8216;protect Ontario&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to CBC News, Ministry of Finance spokesperson Sarah Chapin said the province is delivering a plan to &#8220;protect Ontario&#8221; and is using every tool to &#8220;streamline processes and cut the unnecessary red tape that has held [Ontario&#8217;s] economy back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She said the plan was endorsed by Ontarians when they elected the Ford government &#8220;with a third record majority&#8221; after last year&#8217;s snap election.<\/p>\n<p>WATCH | Controversy surrounded Ford&#8217;s budget bill due to changes to FOI laws:<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1777146922_607_default.jpg\"  alt=\"\" class=\"thumbnail\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"video-item-title\">Ford\u2019s omnibus budget bill passed. What will it mean for freedom of information laws?<\/p>\n<p>The Ford government&#8217;s controversial budget bill, which includes changes to freedom of information laws, passed at Queen&#8217;s Park Thursday.
