{"id":628428,"date":"2026-04-25T20:39:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T20:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/628428\/"},"modified":"2026-04-25T20:39:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T20:39:08","slug":"why-you-cant-watch-the-michael-jackson-doc-leaving-neverland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/628428\/","title":{"rendered":"Why You Can&#8217;t Watch the Michael Jackson Doc &#8216;Leaving Neverland&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhen it premiered in 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/leaving-neverland-michael-jackson-accusers-wade-robson-james-safechuck-801830\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leaving Neverland<\/a> seemed like it would completely altar the way everyone thought about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/michael-jackson\/\" id=\"auto-tag_michael-jackson\" data-tag=\"michael-jackson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Jackson<\/a> forever. The two-part, four-hour film centered around Wade Robson and James Safechuck, who accused Jackson, in often excruciating detail, of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-features\/michael-jackson-child-sexual-abuse-allegations-timeline-785746\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sexually abusing them<\/a> over many years when they were children.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe Jackson estate was quick to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/michael-jackson-estate-leaving-neverland-tabloid-character-assassination-784968\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">denounce the film<\/a> as \u201cyet another lurid production in an outrageous and pathetic attempt to exploit and cash in on Michael Jackson.\u201d They also called Robson and Safechuck\u2019s claims \u201cdated and discredited.\u201d (Jackson denied all allegations of abuse against him when he was alive.) But, released at the height of the #MeToo movement, the documentary seemed to prompt a serious reckoning with Jackson: His music was pulled from some radio stations abroad, brand collaborations were <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/fashion\/la-ig-louis-vuitton-mens-collection-michael-jackson-leaving-neverland-20190315-story.html\">nixed<\/a>, and even an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-news\/the-simpsons-michael-jackson-episode-pulled-805126\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">episode of The Simpsons <\/a>Jackson guested on in 1991 was taking out of circulation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSeven years later, though, Jackson is arguably as popular as he\u2019s ever been. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/michael-jackson-abuse-allegations-biopic-explainer-1235552096\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recently released biopic<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-reviews\/michael-jackson-biopic-review-1235540689\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michael<\/a> is projected to be a blockbuster smash. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/leaving-neverland\/\" id=\"auto-tag_leaving-neverland\" data-tag=\"leaving-neverland\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leaving Neverland<\/a> \u2014 a genuinely consequential work of documentary filmmaking that won an Emmy and was nominated for a Peabody \u2014 is no longer available to watch on any official streaming platform in the United States.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAhead of its arrival on HBO, the Jackson estate sued the cable network, claiming the film violated a non-disparagement clause in a 1992 contract between Jackson and HBO over the Michael Jackson in Concert in Bucharest: The Dangerous Tour. The estate wasn\u2019t able to stop the film from premiering, but their case did gain traction in the courts as they tried to compel HBO into arbitration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe case dragged on for several years, but eventually settled in October 2024. The two parties agreed to drop the suit, and as part of the deal, HBO said it would remove Leaving Neverland from its streaming platform. At the time, an HBO spokesperson told <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/puck.news\/newsletter_content\/what-im-hearing-zimmers-firing-an-hbo-disappearance-films-long-covid\/\">Puck<\/a>, the matter \u201chas been amicably resolved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSince then, the film has been unavailable, and it will remain unavailable for at least a few more years.\u00a0In a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-features\/michael-jackson-movie-leaving-neverland-dan-reed-director-1235553233\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interview with Rolling Stone<\/a>, Leaving Neverland director Dan Reed called the doc\u2019s removal \u201cpainful\u201d and \u201ca gut punch.\u201d The filmmaker was obviously aware of the legal dispute, but wasn\u2019t really involved. He credited HBO for financing the film and fighting the estate\u2019s claims for several years, but said the ultimate result reflected certain themes in Leaving Neverland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201c[P]ower, influence, and cunning lawyers can achieve almost impossible feats of repression,\u201d Reed said. \u201cThey suppress anything. They suppressed Jackson\u2019s child abuse while he was alive. Even when he was taken to court in the criminal trial. He shouldn\u2019t have got away with that, but he did\u2026\u00a0 It shows that you can ride roughshod over the truth if you have aggressive, resourceful lawyers and an immense amount of social capital. Even [HBO owner] Warner Bros. were unable to stand up to them in the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThough effectively blacked out for now, Leaving Neverland will likely be released again. The rights to the film revert back to Reed in 2029, and he said he intends to \u201cmake sure\u201d that it \u201ccan be seen in North America.\u201d He stressed that there\u2019s \u2018no problem or issue\u2019 with the film,\u201d saying, \u201cThe integrity and truthfulness of the film hasn\u2019t been challenged or undermined in any way. This is a technical legal settlement to do with a contractual dispute between HBO and someone HBO signed a contract with a long time ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn March 2025, not long after the original film was pulled, Reed released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/michael-jackson-documentary-finding-neverland-sequel-release-date-1235274021\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leaving Neverland sequel<\/a> that found Robson and Safechuck discussing the latest developments in their legal battle against the Jackson estate, as well as the response to the film. (After years of appeals, Robson and Safechuck\u2019s combined suit will go to trial this November.) Reed released the film on YouTube, but admitted to being unsatisfied with the results: YouTube\u2019s algorithm doesn\u2019t exactly prioritize films dealing with issues like child sexual abuse, and the film was vulnerable to mass downvoting from Jackson\u2019s devoted fanbase.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<p>\t\tRelated Content<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAs for his thoughts on the biopic, Reed was forceful and blunt. He said the film will likely leave a new generation of young viewers with a picture of Jackson as \u201ca very talented performer who was rather nice to children.\u201d Reed called that \u201ca travesty of the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe continued, \u201cYoung people are familiar with the trope of the movie star or pop star whose private life is unsavory. They\u2019re not stupid or na\u00efve. But it\u2019s a testament to the power of the estate and its heft in Hollywood because there\u2019s this reality distortion field where, \u2018It\u2019s Michael fucking Jackson. What are you talking about? None of your child abuse stuff. Fuck that. It\u2019s Michael fucking Jackson.\u2019 This is pure money. It\u2019s pure influence. It\u2019s pure fucking Hollywood glory. And you look at these people and go, \u2018Don\u2019t you have a spark of\u2026 Do you have children?
