corporate report<\/a> coming before council that TransLink has completed 30 per cent of the design for the BRT along King George and public support for BRT along this corridor stands at 84 per cent.<\/p>\n\u201cIn early 2026, TransLink conducted public consultation to gauge community knowledge and support for BRT on King George Boulevard,\u201d Neuman noted. \u201cInput received from the public was used to help inform alignment and design decisions. A total of 1,616 responses were received from Surrey residents and 84 per cent of respondents indicated BRT along King George believed it would improve transportation in the corridor.\u201d<\/p>\n
The 30 per cent design includes 20 kilometres of \u201ccentre-running\u201d dedicated BRT lanes with four regular traffic lanes, with some variations.<\/p>\n
Bus Rapid Transit, Neuman added, offers a \u201chigher level of service than the existing RapidBus service and can be delivered faster and more cost effectively than other rapid transit \u2013 light rail transit is on the order of four times more costly than BRT while SkyTrain is 10 times more costly than BRT.\u201d<\/p>\n
In late 2023 Surrey council endorsed BRT on Kinge George from the City Centre to South Surrey by way of Newton as the city\u2019s \u201ctop BRT priority corridor\u201d and instructed city staff to work with TransLink on advancing its design.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe City seeks a high-quality public realm along the corridor for pedestrians, cyclists and businesses, with continuous sidewalks and street trees as fundamental corridor elements that support accessibility, safety, and the overall character,\u201d Neuman writes.<\/p>\n
King George Boulevard, he advises council, has \u201csufficient\u201d road allowance to accommodate two dedicated BRT lanes.<\/p>\n
There are 12 proposed BRT stops along the route, at Surrey Central Station, King George Station, 96 Avenue, 88 Avenue, 80 Avenue, 76 Avenue, Newton Exchange, 64 Avenue, South Surrey Park & Ride, the 32 Avenue Diversion, 24 Avenue, and Semiahmoo Town Centre.<\/p>\n
