A fatal multi-vehicle crash has prompted the closure of eastbound lanes on Highway 401 in Pickering at Whites Road. <\/p>\n
All eastbound lanes of Highway 401 in Pickering are closed Sunday morning following what police describe as a \u201cserious\u201d multi-vehicle collision.<\/p>\n
In a post to social media, Ontario Provincial Police say the closure is in effect at Brock Road, where emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle crash just before 3 a.m. for reports of a collision involving a pickup truck and a passenger vehicle.<\/p>\n
The driver of the vehicle, who police identified as a 38-year-old, was pronounced dead at the scene. <\/p>\n
Hours later, at approximately 4:25 a.m., officials say a second crash occurred involving a passenger vehicle and a police cruiser in the same area. <\/p>\n
In that incident, police say two officers were transported to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. <\/p>\n
As a result, all eastbound collector and express lanes from Whites Road remain closed.<\/p>\n
Drivers are being advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes, as they say the closure is \u201cexpected to be lengthy.\u201d<\/p>\n
The investigation is ongoing.<\/p>\n
UPDATE (9:20 a.m.): Two officers were transported to hospital with serious but non-life threatening or life altering injuries.
