{"id":630309,"date":"2026-04-26T18:25:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-26T18:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/630309\/"},"modified":"2026-04-26T18:25:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-26T18:25:11","slug":"canadians-line-up-for-free-groceries-in-calgary-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/630309\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadians line up for free groceries in Calgary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Rising grocery prices are continuing to strain household budgets across Canada, with more people turning to community support as the cost of basic food remains high.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In Calgary, thousands lined up on a chilly spring day for free groceries from the Guru Nanak Free Kitchen, a non-profit distributing 80,000 pounds of potatoes along with other staples.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The line stretched for blocks, with some people waiting for more than an hour. Many arrived with bags, wagons, and suitcases, hoping to stock up on essentials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe lineup\u2019s impressive,\u201d said Evan Godfrey, a Calgary resident. \u201cI think there\u2019s a lot of people that are kind of on harder times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Godfrey said rising food costs are putting pressure on his budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe cost of groceries has basically doubled, compared to most of my other bills,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Volunteers say the demand reflects growing affordability challenges, even for those who may not typically rely on food support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cFor some people, this is absolutely necessary,\u201d said Darshan Khunkhun, a volunteer with the organization. \u201cFor other people it may not be absolutely necessary, but what it does is it gives them this little bit of flexibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Some in line said even a small amount of free food can ease financial strain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt definitely helps,\u201d said Israel Anikwe. \u201cThis takes a lot off that load.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">New data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/daily-quotidien\/260420\/dq260420a-eng.htm?HPA=1&amp;indid=3665-1&amp;indgeo=0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Statistics Canada<\/a> shows grocery prices rose 4.4 per cent year over year, adding to cost-of-living pressures being felt nationwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Alberta government said this week it plans to meet with major grocers to explore ways to address affordability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWhile many of the pressures on food prices are national and global, we\u2019re focused on what we can change locally to increase competition and help lower prices for Albertans,\u201d the province told CTV News in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Moshe Lander, an economics professor at Concordia University, said the issue is not just rising prices, but incomes failing to keep pace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIf you take a look at the data, our income has been lagging behind inflation for years.
