And it also forced a realization: guesswork wasn\u2019t going to cut it anymore.<\/p>\n
Turning to Data for Answers<\/p>\n
So how does NASCAR know that lightning is indeed within 8 miles, and how can they be certain when weather could impact a race days before the event? It\u2019s because among all the Official Partners in the sport, there is one that provides a very vital, valuable service<\/a>. The Weather Company<\/a>, a simple name for a company that does a great deal to ensure that if Mother Nature comes calling at a racetrack, NASCAR will know all about it, and well in advance.<\/p>\n How? It came from data.<\/p>\n The Ringmaster Behind Race Day<\/p>\n Orchestrating how that information turns into action is Tom Bryant, NASCAR\u2019s Vice President of Race Operations, the closest thing the sport has to a ringmaster for its traveling circus. He\u2019s not the one making the final call, but he is the one making sure that when the call comes, everything that needs to happen actually does.<\/p>\n \u201cThat is a call our senior leadership makes,\u201d Bryant said. \u201cIt impacts not just the 100,000-plus fans at the track, but millions watching, sponsors\u2014so many stakeholders.\u201d<\/p>\n His job is to ensure the machine is ready to move when that decision is made.<\/p>\n And increasingly, those decisions are shaped long before race day.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have a standing group that meets\u2026 and we involve the Weather Company forecaster,\u201d he said. \u201cWe talk through it and make decisions well in advance so everyone has time to adjust.\u201d<\/p>\n And the data provided by The Weather Company informs NASCAR and helps those decisions.<\/p>\n \u201cOur approach now is that weather intelligence is woven into the planning process from the very beginning,\u201d Bryant said. \u201cWe don\u2019t build a schedule and then see how it lines up with the forecast. We take into account what\u2019s coming.\u201d<\/p>\n At Daytona, that meant acting early.<\/p>\n \u201cWe knew weather was inbound,\u201d Bryant said. \u201cThey were spot on. We were able to be proactive instead of reactive, get the race in safely, and allow fans to get back to their vehicles before the weather got tough.\u201d<\/p>\n That last part matters more than anything.<\/p>\n Because while a delayed race is inconvenient, a dangerous situation is unacceptable.<\/p>\n How the Forecast Gets That Precise<\/p>\n Behind that decision-making is a level of forecasting that goes far beyond what fans see on their phones.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re forecasting at an hourly granularity out 15 days,\u201d said Matt McCrary, a meteorologist with The Weather Company. \u201cWithin three to five days, we have a pretty good idea if there\u2019s going to be disruption. And as you get closer, that confidence increases.\u201d<\/p>\n Closer, in this case, means very close.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t need to know it might rain Sunday afternoon,\u201d Bryant said. \u201cI need to know within five to ten minutes when it\u2019s going to start\u2026 We\u2019d love to know within five seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n That level of precision is what turns weather from a surprise into a strategy.<\/p>\n Using a mix of global models, proprietary data, and input from roughly 150 meteorologists, along with nearly 190,000 personal weather stations across the U.S., The Weather Company can narrow forecasts down to minute-by-minute windows and highly specific locations.<\/p>\n \u201cWe take data from every source you can imagine,\u201d McCrary said. \u201cGlobal models, regional models, proprietary models, all overseen by meteorologists.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIn many cases, we can get down to about five minutes,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n NASHVILLE, TN – JUNE 26: A pit crew member walks past a rain puddle as the sun sets during the running of the 2nd annual NASCAR Cup Series Ally 400 on June 26, 2022 at Nashville SuperSpeedway in Nashville, TN. A storm can hit one end of the track while the other stays dry, creating conditions that are as unpredictable as they are dangerous. It\u2019s known as hyperlocal forecasting.<\/p>\n \u201cWe can get very granular spatially,\u201d McCrary said. \u201cGenerally speaking, the data sits on a one-kilometer grid and then we have the ability to downscale a little bit there.\u201d<\/p>\n And the forecast doesn\u2019t sit still.<\/p>\n \u201cIt absolutely changes,\u201d McCrary said. \u201cThe atmosphere is dynamic. You can have perfect conditions, and 15 minutes later, storms rolling in.\u201d<\/p>\n But it is, after all, a forecast.<\/p>\n \u201cWeather forecasting is an imperfect science,\u201d McCrary said. \u201cWe\u2019re providing the best information at that moment in time.\u201d<\/p>\n Which is why NASCAR doesn\u2019t just check the weather, it builds entire race weekends around it.<\/p>\n By Tuesday morning of race week, Bryant said NASCAR has already reviewed multiple forecast iterations and is discussing potential adjustments.<\/p>\n The Cost of Getting It Wrong<\/p>\n That early planning isn\u2019t just about getting cars on track. It\u2019s about managing a logistical operation that spans thousands of people and millions of dollars.<\/p>\n \u201cIf we move a race to Monday, I\u2019ve got to change flights, hotels, truck schedules, deliveries,\u201d Bryant said. \u201cThere are so many secondary and tertiary effects. It\u2019s enormous what it could cost.\u201d<\/p>\n That ripple effect touches everything from broadcast windows to local law enforcement to the next race on the schedule.<\/a><\/p>\n Eliminating the Surprise<\/p>\n Which is why avoiding surprises has become the real objective.<\/p>\n \u201cFor an operation, you\u2019re only as good as the intelligence you have,\u201d said Bryant, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel. \u201cThis is a critical component of our planning.\u201d<\/p>\n In other words, NASCAR still can\u2019t control the weather.<\/p>\n But it\u2019s getting seriously close to outsmarting it.<\/p>\n And these days, the difference between a completed race and 100,000 soaked fans might come down to one thing: knowing exactly when the sky is about to blink.<\/p>\n![\"NASCAR](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/7a59f1133d5b2b51eab9836eff27c205.jpeg\"\/)
