{"id":630777,"date":"2026-04-26T23:47:13","date_gmt":"2026-04-26T23:47:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/630777\/"},"modified":"2026-04-26T23:47:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-26T23:47:13","slug":"yankees-demote-former-al-rookie-of-the-year-luis-gil-as-struggles-continue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/630777\/","title":{"rendered":"Yankees demote former AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil as struggles continue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HOUSTON \u2014 In a somewhat surprising move, the Yankees demoted the struggling Luis Gil after the Astros rocked him in a 7-4 loss at Daikin Park on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The Yankees didn\u2019t announce a corresponding move, but with Thursday\u2019s\u00a0off day coming, they can skip the fifth spot in the rotation and keep an extra reliever if they want.<\/p>\n<p>Gil\u2019s problems continued when he gave up six runs on five hits, including two home runs, while walking three in four innings. He did not register a strikeout on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust been struggling to get consistency with his, I think, delivery and his fastball profile,\u201d manager Aaron Boone said.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Luis Gil has pitched 12 fewer innings than any other Yankee starter this season <\/p>\n<p>\u2026 and has allowed the most HR (6), walks (11) and ER (13)  among Yankee pitchers.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Katie Sharp (@SharpStats17) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SharpStats17\/status\/2048488530364748023?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April 26, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Over four starts, Gil has a 6.05 ERA. Initially, the Yankees left him off their Opening Day roster because they didn\u2019t need a fifth starter for nearly two weeks into the season \u2014 a sign of how far Gil\u2019s stock has fallen after he won the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year award.<\/p>\n<p>Gil has struggled with command and control of all of his pitches, and his fastball hasn\u2019t had the zip it did two years ago. In 2024, his heater was averaging 96.6 mph. He went into Sunday with it averaging 94.8 mph, and he\u2019s had a hard time using it to set up his slider and changeup.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s struck out just 4.9 batters per nine innings and is largely unable to get hitters to swing and miss at his pitches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s frustrating,\u201d Gil said via the Yankees\u2019 Spanish interpreter. \u201cYou find yourself in a bad slump regarding that.
