{"id":631290,"date":"2026-04-27T05:54:13","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T05:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/631290\/"},"modified":"2026-04-27T05:54:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T05:54:13","slug":"mount-allison-student-will-intern-with-cfl-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/631290\/","title":{"rendered":"Mount Allison student will intern with CFL team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">She may only be 21 years old, but <a href=\"https:\/\/mta.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/mta.ca\/\">Mount Allison University<\/a> student Julia Cameron has had a long journey with football.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It started when she was just 11 months old, when she watched games with her father, a former player at Mount Allison. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cBefore I could even speak, he taught me the illegal procedure sign,\u201d said Cameron. \u201cThe ref would say it and I would do the signal. I fell in love from there.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Cameron played with the boys growing up in Truro, N.S. She was always the only girl on the team. She said she felt like part of the group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s no environment like football,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The commerce student records game and practice video for the Mounties and engages fans on the team\u2019s social media platforms. (Courtesy: Julia Cameron) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Cameron will join the Riders on May 4 for four-weeks during training camp in a department with a lot of other women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s a better club she could be going to,\u201d said Mounties Head Coach Scott Brady. \u201cRegina is absolutely football crazy. If there\u2019s a hub for people in Canada who absolutely love football, that\u2019s it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Brady said Cameron\u2019s role was integral to the Mounties this season and praised her ability to quickly prepare practice film for coaches and players to analyze. While coaching with McMaster University five years ago he said the team started an internship program for women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re definitely seeing more and more women get involved at every level of the game,\u201d he said. \u201cBoth in the CFL and at the U-Sports level. (Courtesy: Julia Cameron) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI never really felt like an outsider but I think it was just watching the NFL and CFL and not seeing any women,\u201d said Cameron.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">As a young player, she thought it would be great to have a female role model playing professional football.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cCan you give us a shot? (Courtesy: Julia Cameron) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mta.ca\/about\/news\/mount-allison-commerce-student-julia-cameron-earns-prestigious-women-football-internship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/mta.ca\/about\/news\/mount-allison-commerce-student-julia-cameron-earns-prestigious-women-football-internship\">According to a news release from Mount Allison University<\/a>, both Saskatchewan and Hamilton reached out to Cameron about positions in marketing and coaching but she decided to join her favourite CFL team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Roughriders senior staff is made up of more than 50 per cent women, a rarity in professional football, the news release stated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Cameron\u2019s advice to other women who want to be involved in the male-dominated world of football is to get your foot in the door.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI think there\u2019s a big barrier of just starting and you feel like you\u2019re going to be judged or you won\u2019t belong and I felt really accepted all along by everyone \u2013 coaches, teammates,\u201d she said. \u201cDon\u2019t let the fear of starting stop you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Cameron will be back with the Mounties in the fall and hopes to turn her education and passion for football into a career. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Julia Cameron is pictured with Mount Allison Mounties head coach Scott Brady at alumni field in Sackville, N.B.
