\n A researcher at Tokyo Metropolitan University has discovered that standard synchrotron safety monitoring can be used to hunt for dark matter<\/p>\n

By repurposing X-ray beams and simple Geiger counters, this method has set more precise limits on \u201cdark photons\u201d than dedicated, multi-million dollar experiments, all without interrupting daily facility operations.<\/p>\n

These hypothetical particles are a leading candidate for dark matter,<\/a> the mysterious substance that makes up the \u201cmissing\u201d mass of the universe.<\/p>\n

\nAn accidental dark matter detector<\/p>\n

The proposal involves repurposing existing safety equipment and infrastructure already present at synchrotron sites:<\/p>\n

The source:<\/p>\n

A component called an undulator generates powerful X-rays that pass through magnetic fields, potentially creating dark photons in the process.<\/p>\n

The barrier:<\/p>\n

Standard safety shielding\u2014walls designed to block dangerous radiation from users\u2014acts as the barrier for a \u201cLight-Shining through a Wall\u201d (LSW) experiment.<\/p>\n

The sensor:<\/p>\n

A simple Geiger-Muller counter, typically used for routine safety monitoring, serves as the detector.<\/p>\n

Reimagining \u201clight-shining through a wall\u201d<\/p>\n

Traditional LSW experiments, like the ALPS experiment in Germany, require high-power lasers and dedicated, expensive facilities.<\/p>\n

Dr Yin\u2019s method is revolutionary because it:<\/p>\n

Requires no dedicated facility:<\/p>\n

It utilises the existing X-ray beams at synchrotrons.<\/p>\n

Runs concurrently:<\/p>\n

The search for dark matter can happen in the background while other scientists use the facility for unrelated research.<\/p>\n

Uses safety data:<\/p>\n

Because current monitoring shows radiation levels behind the walls are safe, scientists can already calculate the maximum possible strength of dark photon interactions.<\/p>\n

Setting new limits<\/p>\n

By modelling the passage of hypothetical dark photons through this setup, Dr Yin established a new \u201cmixing parameter\u201d limit\u2014a measurement of how strongly dark and normal photons interact.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mass range:<\/p>\n

The study focused on dark photons with a mass between 1 and 50 electronvolts.<\/p>\n

The result:<\/p>\n

The interaction limit was found to be less than 0.00001 times the strength of normal photon interactions.<\/p>\n

Greater precision:<\/p>\n

This limit is significantly more stringent than any other laboratory-based LSW experiment in the same mass range to date.<\/p>\n
