New research shows how these structures form, evolve, and sometimes erupt, with possible effects on Earth’s technology. They can stay stable for weeks or even months before suddenly breaking apart. When that happens, they send charged particles into space, which can interfere with satellites and communication systems.

Solar prominences have always been a bit puzzling. They are cooler than their surroundings but much denser, and they seem to float above the Sun’s surface. Recent work from the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research takes a closer look at how that is even possible.

Plasma Structures That Shouldn’t Really Float

Solar prominences are dense clouds of plasma suspended in the Sun’s outer atmosphere. Dr. Lisa-Marie Zessner describes them as dynamic structures that can appear all over the Sun, taking on very different shapes and lifetimes.

Solar prominences arise where magnetic field lines curve downward and create dips. Credit: Nature Astronomy

They sit at around 10,000 degrees, far cooler than the surrounding corona, which exceeds a million degrees. At the same time, they are about 100 times denser than their environment.

“The density of the prominence material is typically two orders of magnitude higher than the density of the surrounding corona.” she added, “A comparison to the typical density ratio might be a piece of wood (a bit dependent on the type of wood).”

To illustrate this contrast, Zessner compares it to a wooden object floating in air, which shows just how unusual the situation is. Reporting from The Debrief highlights that magnetic fields are what hold these heavy structures up against gravity.

A Constant Push And Pull Keeps Them Alive

The study, published in Nature Astronomy on April 23, 2026, focuses on how prominences form and evolve over time. The research team found that they develop in dips between magnetic field arches. Simulations reveal that small bursts of magnetic turbulence push plasma upward, where it becomes trapped and accumulates. This process feeds the prominence and allows it to grow.

The formation of the simulated prominences proceeds in two discrete steps. Credit: Nature Astronomy

“Our calculations show, more realistically than ever before, how both processes interact to supply the prominences with material and thus keep them alive,” stated Zessner .

At the same time, material continuously falls back toward the Sun in what scientists call plasma rain. Zessner notes that this balance between incoming material and ongoing loss determines whether a prominence remains stable, fades away, or erupts.

Why Eruptions Are Taken Seriously On Earth

When a prominence becomes unstable, it can trigger an eruption that sends charged particles into space. These events can have real consequences for Earth. The source material points out that, even with atmospheric protection, strong solar activity can disrupt power grids and communication systems. Satellites, especially those used for GPS, are even more exposed.

A two-perspective look at prominence dynamics. Solanki, who directs the Sun and Heliosphere Department at MPS, better forecasting remains a priority.

“To protect Earth’s infrastructure in time, reliable forecasts of dangerous space weather are needed. A deeper understanding of prominences is a crucial piece of the puzzle,” he noted.

Solar prominences, huge arcs of plasma hovering above the Sun, are getting fresh attention from scientists studying space…

[23
49,48,66,306
0":"post-632033","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-space","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-science","11":"tag-space
["GET
