{"id":63222,"date":"2025-08-12T05:35:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T05:35:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/63222\/"},"modified":"2025-08-12T05:35:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T05:35:08","slug":"74-million-year-old-fossil-of-tiny-mouse-sized-mammal-found","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/63222\/","title":{"rendered":"74-million-year-old fossil of &#8220;tiny mouse-sized mammal&#8221; found"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Scientists have discovered the fossil of a tiny mouse-sized mammal that lived in the time of the dinosaurs in Chilean Patagonia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cYeutherium pressor\u201d weighed between 30 and 40 grams (about one ounce) and lived in the Upper Cretaceous period, about 74 million years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It is the smallest mammal ever found in this region of South America, dating back to the era when it was part of a continental land mass known as Gondwana.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The fossil consists of \u201ca small piece of jaw with a molar and the crown and roots of two other molars,\u201d said Hans Puschel, who led the team of scientists from the University of Chile and Chile\u2019s Millennium Nucleus research centre on early mammals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The discovery was published this month in the British scientific journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Researchers found the fossil in the Rio de las Las Chinas Valley in Chile\u2019s Magallanes region, about 3,000 kilometres (1,864 miles) south of Santiago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Despites its similarity to a small rodent, \u201cYeutherium pressor\u201d was a mammal that must have laid eggs, like the platypus, or carried its young in a pouch like kangaroos or opossums.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The shape of its teeth suggests that it probably had a diet of relatively hard vegetables.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Just like the dinosaurs with whom it co-existed, the tiny mammal abruptly went extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period, about 66 million years ago.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Scientists have discovered the fossil of a tiny mouse-sized mammal that lived in the time of the dinosaurs&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":63223,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[712,49,48,66],"class_list":{"0":"post-63222","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-science","8":"tag-apple-news","9":"tag-ca","10":"tag-canada","11":"tag-science"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/63222","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=63222"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/63222\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/63223"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=63222"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=63222"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=63222"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
