{"id":632567,"date":"2026-04-27T19:54:21","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T19:54:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/632567\/"},"modified":"2026-04-27T19:54:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T19:54:21","slug":"winners-and-losers-from-a-tense-nascar-cup-race-at-talladega","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/632567\/","title":{"rendered":"Winners and losers from a tense NASCAR Cup race at Talladega"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Jack Link&#8217;s 500 at Talladega was another memorable superspeedway race with high-drama, big wrecks, a new winner, and some of the same frustrations we&#8217;ve come to expect in these events.<\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/carson-hocevar\/953387\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Carson Hocevar<\/a> became the 208th different winner in NASCAR Cup Series history, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/chris-buescher\/17348\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Chris Buescher<\/a> just missed out on ending RFK&#8217;s win drought.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a look back at the biggest winners and losers from Sunday&#8217;s Cup race at Talladega:<\/p>\n<p>WINNER: Carson Hocevar for earning his first win, but also that epic burnout\u00a0<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sizer\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAABAAAAAJCAYAAAA7KqwyAAAAGXRFWHRTb2Z0d2FyZQBBZG9iZSBJbWFnZVJlYWR5ccllPAAAABpJREFUeNpi\/P\/\/PwMlgImBQjBqwLAwACDAAOVfAw9\/ZDvcAAAAAElFTkSuQmCC\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Watch: Hocevar emotional after first Cup win: &#8216;It took me awhile&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>It seemed inevitable that\u00a0Hocevar would become one of the 200+ drivers who have won a NASCAR Cup race. He avoided the massive mid-race crash without a scratch, positioned himself perfectly in the final pit stop, and stayed in control for the final 40 laps of the race while battling back-and-forth with Buescher. He now jumps up to eight in the standings, delivering Spire its first win in almost seven years. And how about that burnout? They have been ridiculously close throughout the 2025 and 2026 seasons, and Sunday was just the latest example. Buescher and Hocevar shared control of the race for the final 40 laps, but in the end, the No. 17 came one position short of the victory. That is the Roush&#8217;s seventh runner-up finish since the team&#8217;s last win.<\/p>\n<p>WINNER: FRM after getting three cars in the top 11\u00a0<br \/>\n   <img decoding=\"async\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/noah-gragson-front-row-motorsp.jpg\" alt=\"Noah Gragson, Front Row Motorsports\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Noah Gragson, Front Row Motorsports<\/p>\n<p class=\"photographer\">Photo by: David Jensen \/ Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>In a race that featured a massive race-halting accident, it&#8217;s quite impressive to get all three cars to the checkered flag without any real damage at all. But that&#8217;s exactly what\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/team\/front-row-motorsports\/74\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Front Row Motorsports<\/a> did, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/zane-smith\/831036\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Zane Smith<\/a> fifth and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/noah-gragson\/407569\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Noah Gragson<\/a> ninth in what is the best finish for both cars so far this year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/todd-gilliland\/289554\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Todd Gilliland<\/a> wasn&#8217;t that far behind them either, placing 11th. No other team even managed to get more than two cars into the top 25!<\/p>\n<p>LOSER: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/bubba-wallace\/18588\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Bubba Wallace<\/a> and the many victims of the Big One<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A clever decision to short-pit put Wallace out front for the second stage of the race, and he remained there until Lap 115 when he crashed from the lead. Unfortunately, that wreck ended up collected at least 25 cars. It ended the day for Wallace, but also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/kyle-larson\/17135\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Kyle Larson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/joey-logano\/9725\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Joey Logano<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/ryan-blaney\/18336\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ryan Blaney<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/william-byron\/142818\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">William Byron<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/cole-custer\/19887\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Cole Custer<\/a>. Several others suffered significant damage. Entering\u00a0Talladega, he had just one top 20 finish this year, but he managed to finish a strong third, pushing the Hendrick-aligned Spire Chevrolet to the win. It was a positive result that the No. 48 team really needed, and Bowman&#8217;s first top five since Richmond in August of last year.<\/p>\n<p>LOSER: The drivers who wrecked out of the top ten on the final lap<br \/>\n   <img decoding=\"async\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/ryan-preece-rfk-racing-austin-.jpg\" alt=\"Ryan Preece, RFK Racing, Austin Dillon, Richard Childress Racing, Shane van Gisbergen, Trackhouse Racing\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Ryan Preece, RFK Racing, Austin Dillon, Richard Childress Racing, Shane van Gisbergen, Trackhouse Racing<\/p>\n<p class=\"photographer\">Photo by: Sean Gardner \/ Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s nothing worse than almost making it to the finish of a\u00a0superspeedway race unscathed, only for it to all come apart in the tri-oval. At that point, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/austin-dillon\/14661\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Austin Dillon<\/a> was moments away from a potential top five finish, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/ryan-preece\/16003\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ryan Preece<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/shane-van-gisbergen\/10844\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Shane van Gisbergen<\/a> were set for top tens. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/christopher-bell\/16942\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Christopher Bell<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/cody-ware\/54264\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Cody Ware<\/a> also had an outside shot at the top ten as well, but instead, all of these cars ended up crashing into the outside wall. Among them, Bell placed the highest &#8230; in 17th. When a group of cars tangled together in front of him in the final seconds of the race, Busch secured a tenth-place finish. After ten races this year, that now stands as the very first top ten for the entirety\u00a0 of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/team\/richard-childress-racing\/65\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Richard Childress Racing<\/a>. Griffin &#8211; Icon Sportswire &#8211; Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>To NASCAR&#8217;s credit, the plan to hold preseason thunder in 2027 may help to alleviate some of these issues, but it cannot come soon enough. Fuel-saving remains paramount, but the stage adjustments simply changed at what portion of the race that happens. And once half the field crashed, the race became a two-wide gridlock at the front, and the entire field was basically stuck where they were running for the final 40 laps.\u00a0Buescher,\u00a0Hocevar, and bowman were the first three cars off pit road during the final stop, and they were also the first three cars to reach the checkered flag.<\/p>\n<p>Read Also:<\/p>\n<p>WINNER: Chad Finchum leads some laps for the little guys<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When the entire field was saving fuel early in Stage 1, the part-time driver of the No. 66 Ford Mustang had a different idea. Finchum drove to the front, leading eight laps for the Carl Long-owned team. It was the first time Finchum had led laps in any of the three national levels of NASCAR. Despite getting collected in the massive mid-race crash, Finchum still went on to finish 28th, which is his best result yet at the Cup level.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read Also:<\/p>\n<p>LOSER: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/erik-jones\/19934\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Erik Jones<\/a> has win shot snatched away<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jones was in a great position in the closing laps at\u00a0Talladega, pushing Buescher out into the lead and certainly had an opportunity to go for the win himself. Unfortunately, that chance vanished with just a few laps to do when he spun out after being door-slammed by Hocevar, who slid sideways following an aggressive bump from behind.
