Formula 1 returns to the track after a five-week hiatus with its first of three trips to the United States this weekend for the Miami Grand Prix. The race, now in its fifth year, takes place on a temporary circuit that envelopes the Miami Dolphins\u2019 Hard Rock Stadium.<\/p>\n

Mercedes\u2019 Kimi Antonelli hopes that the long layoff won\u2019t slow his momentum as the Italian has won the last two grands prix after finishing P2 at the season opener in Australia. Red Bull\u2019s Max Verstappen looks to add his third pole position and win in Miami as he is by far the most decorated driver in the event\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

This also marks the first weekend in which Yahoo Sports will stream each practice and qualifying session live on Yahoo Sports TV<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what to know ahead of the Miami Grand Prix race weekend:<\/p>\n

Sprint weekend format returns<\/p>\n

In 2021, F1 introduced the Sprint weekend format, which moved traditional qualifying to Friday and put in its place a shortened race on Saturday that would award minimal points and set the grid for Sunday\u2019s Grand Prix.<\/p>\n

A few nominal tweaks later, we have the current format: One practice on Friday morning local time, followed by sprint qualifying in the afternoon. The sprint race itself is held on Saturday morning, with grand prix qualifying later in the day and the main event itself on Sunday afternoon. The top eight finishers of the sprint will be awarded points in descending order (eight for P1, seven for P2, six for P3, etc.).<\/p>\n

This weekend marks the second of six sprint format weekends in 2026.<\/p>\n
