{"id":633469,"date":"2026-04-28T05:38:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-28T05:38:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/633469\/"},"modified":"2026-04-28T05:38:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T05:38:12","slug":"china-faces-a-france-sized-demographic-loss-that-threatens-coastal-growth-analysts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/633469\/","title":{"rendered":"China faces a France-sized demographic loss that threatens coastal growth: analysts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>China\u2019s population is projected to fall by about 60 million over the next decade, threatening economic activity in wealthier coastal provinces and putting growing pressure on the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3332223\/more-china-becomes-moderately-aged-how-will-its-economy-change?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">public pension system<\/a>, according to recent analyst reports.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Research firm Rhodium Group estimated that the world\u2019s second-most populous country, after India, could lose the equivalent of nearly France\u2019s entire population over the coming 10 years.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">In a nation of 1.41 billion people, a decline of this scale would weigh on labour productivity, consumption and social security, including in richer coastal provinces that have powered much of China\u2019s growth over the past four decades.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cThe country\u2019s most developed provinces are seeing falling populations, which will impact overall consumption and the future productivity of the labour force,\u201d wrote Allen Feng, associate director with Rhodium Group\u2019s China markets research team and the report\u2019s author.<\/p>\n<p>The demographic decline is already feeding through into the economy, as smaller families and <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/chinas-ageing-population?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">an ageing population<\/a> place greater strain on elderly care. Fiscal subsidies to social security funds hit a record 2.9 trillion yuan (US$425 billion) last year, equivalent to 10.1 per cent of general budget spending, \u201cand appears set to rise in the future\u201d, Feng wrote.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cThe impact on household consumption is obvious, but the larger problem for Beijing may be the hit to social security funds,\u201d he added, noting that demographic pressures were also likely to contribute to weakening credit and lower interest rates.<\/p>\n<p>One of the main drivers of the trend is a collapse in births. The 7.92 million babies born in China in 2025 <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3340398\/chinas-demographic-alarms-blare-births-hit-historic-low-and-population-shrinks-again?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">marked a record low<\/a>, down 17 per cent from a year earlier, while the country\u2019s population shrank for a fourth straight year.
