\n Police in Brazil swooped on the home and political headquarters of Jair Bolsonaro early Friday, searching the properties, ordering the former president to wear an electronic ankle tag, barring him from speaking to foreign officials or approaching embassies and prohibiting him from using social media.\n <\/p>\n
\n The restrictions, ordered by Brazil\u2019s Supreme Court, were motivated by concerns that Bolsonaro would flee the country, amid his trial over an alleged plot to overturn the results of the 2022 presidential election to remain in power. Bolsonaro has denied wrongdoing.\n <\/p>\n
\n Federal police also accused Bolsonaro and his son, Eduardo, of conspiring with the US government to impose sanctions against Brazilian officials, according to court documents. That action, the court said, \u201cwould directly benefit his father and financier, Jair Messias Bolsonaro.\u201d CNN has reached out to the US State Department for comment.\n <\/p>\n
\n Federal police also seized an unspecified amount of US dollars in cash.\n <\/p>\n
\n Speaking outside the police station Friday, Bolsonaro called the ankle tag \u201csupreme humiliation\u201d and said that he \u201cnever thought of leaving Brazil.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cThe suspicions (of me leaving the country) are an exaggeration\u2026 damn it, I\u2019m a former president of the republic \u2013 I\u2019m 70 years old,\u201d he said.\n <\/p>\n
\n Bolsonaro added that police seized \u201cabout 14,000 US dollars\u201d and claimed the money was for personal use, adding he had the receipts to prove it.\n <\/p>\n
\n The raid came as US President Donald Trump tried to force his current Brazilian counterpart Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva to end the criminal trial against his predecessor by threatening crippling tariffs on the country.\n <\/p>\n
\n Trump last week threatened Brazil with tariffs of 50% starting August 1, according to a letter posted to his social media platform, Truth Social.\n <\/p>\n
\n In the letter, Trump linked the tariff threat to what he described as a \u201cwitch hunt\u201d trial against Bolsonaro, a close ally.\n <\/p>\n
\n Brazil\u2019s Supreme Court on Friday accused Bolsonaro and his son Eduardo of working with the US to impose the tariffs.\n <\/p>\n
\n The court documents highlighted a confidential meeting Bolsonaro had with a US State Department official and highlighted Trump\u2019s letter as an \u201coffensive\u201d and \u201cclear threat\u201d to Brazilian sovereignty.\n <\/p>\n

\n In an interview with Reuters on Friday, Bolsonaro denied that anyone lobbied the US to sanction Brazilian authorities working on his case.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cThere isn\u2019t any lobby to sanction an authority,\u201d Bolsonaro said.\n <\/p>\n
\n Speaking exclusively to CNN <\/a>Thursday, da Silva, who is widely known as Lula, said that Trump\u2019s threats had broken away from \u201cprotocol\u201d and argued that his predecessor\u2019s fate cannot be part of trade negotiations.\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cThe judiciary branch of power in Brazil is independent. The president of the Republic has no influence whatsoever,\u201d he said, adding that Bolsonaro \u201cis not being judged personally. He is being judged by the acts he tried to organize a coup d\u2019etat.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n Lula added that Trump would be standing trial in his country if the actions he took during the January 6 insurrection had been committed in Brazil.\n <\/p>\n \n On Friday, Trump posted a letter to Bolsonaro on Truth Social, in which he suggested the former Brazilian leader was the victim of an \u201cunjust system\u201d and said that he would be \u201cwatching closely.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n Bolsonaro posted Trump\u2019s letter on his official X account and thanked Trump for his support with \u201ceternal gratitude,\u201d in a subsequent video.\n <\/p>\n \n Bolsonaro had previously appeared to be preparing for the outcome of his trial and dismissed the idea that he might be considered a flight risk, saying: \u201cI\u2019ll face the process.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cI\u2019m not considering doing anything, I\u2019m not considering anything, nothing at all,\u201d he said, adding: \u201cI\u2019m not a criminal, the criminal is the one persecuting me.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n Bolsonaro could face more than four decades behind bars if found guilty of masterminding the coup.\n <\/p>\n \n He is among 34 people charged<\/a> with five crimes, including attempting the coup.
