and industry partners awarded $7.5M to lead semiconductor research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new collaboration between McMaster researchers and industry partners TechInsights and Fibics Incorporated is advancing research and development for next-generation semiconductors.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a05-year\u00a0project,\u00a0titled CASCADE\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Correlative Analysis\u00a0of Semiconductors: Characterization from Atoms to Devices\u00a0\u2014\u00a0is led by Nabil Bassim, a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>CASCADE is supported by a $7.5 million investment from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the project partners.<\/p>\n<p>Found everywhere, from mobile and IoT devices and computers to vehicles and more, semiconductors are pivotal to every sector of the global economy.<\/p>\n<p>As devices become smaller and faster, there is a growing need to better understand and optimize semiconductors for the future.<\/p>\n<p>Together, the CASCADE partners will develop a multi-scale, comprehensive, reliable and efficient characterization workflow for semiconductor microchips, leveraging state-of-the-art instrumentation at <a href=\"https:\/\/ccem.mcmaster.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy (CCEM)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This will involve using machine learning to speed up data processing, automatically identify key features, and improve accuracy when studying materials at different scales.<\/p>\n<p>Electron microscopy characterization facilities like CCEM are critical to the advancement of semiconductor technologies, contributing rich data and insights that drive innovation in Canada and globally, says Bassim, scientific director of CCEM.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCCEM\u00a0provides\u00a0unparalleled imaging and characterization of novel materials, structural designs, and defects at atomic scales, giving semiconductor researchers the insights they need to overcome current limitations,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0project is expected to enhance CCEM\u2019s capabilities for advanced semiconductor\u00a0characterization and failure analysis, making them\u00a0better prepared to meet the future needs of partners and clients in Canada and worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re excited to partner with TechInsights and Fibics Incorporated on this project and work together to create new knowledge about semiconductors, in support of Canada\u2019s semiconductor value innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fibics Incorporated is a Canadian company focused on the research and development of systems and workflows for microscopy, imaging and nano-patterning technologies, primarily based on focused ion and focused electron beam microscopy.<\/p>\n<p>Mike\u00a0Phaneuf,\u00a0Fibics\u2019\u00a0president\u00a0and\u00a0CTO,\u00a0welcomes the\u00a0CASCADE\u00a0collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0great to see this type of focused development effort by Canadian industry\u00a0and academia, working together to advance semiconductor technology research and development within Canada, as well as on a global scale,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFibics\u2019 30 years of experience with the semiconductor industry, coupled with our own R&amp;D technological advances in microscopy, will provide a solid foundation for our portion of this project, and we look forward to the advancements that come from this multi-team approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Anand, Andrew Gadsden,\u00a0and Brian Langelier from the Faculty of Engineering\u00a0are co-investigators\u00a0on the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the key strengths of CASCADE is its multidisciplinary approach, combining domain and industry expertise with advanced artificial intelligence methods,\u201d says Gadsden, an expert in\u00a0AI\u00a0and machine learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy building and applying useful AI tools for automated analysis, we can significantly improve the speed, consistency, and scalability of semiconductor characterization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gadsden notes that these tools will have lasting impact beyond\u00a0the CASCADE\u00a0project, supporting innovation across a range of technology sectors\u00a0and contributing to Canada\u2019s strategic\u00a0priorities.<\/p>\n<p>Trainees will also play a key role in the project. Twelve students and 10 post-doctoral fellows will train in state-of-the-art facilities at McMaster, receive mentorship from experts at TechInsights and Fibics, and develop skills in advanced characterization, semiconductor processing and scientific computing.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s\u00a0a timely\u00a0collaboration\u00a0that\u00a0showcases\u00a0McMaster\u2019s\u00a0leadership\u00a0in materials research,\u00a0experiential learning\u00a0and industry partnerships, says Gianni Parise, McMaster\u2019s vice-president, research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSemiconductors power technologies that are essential to Canadian industry and society.
