With Formula One\u2019s (FWONK<\/a>) Miami Grand Prix just days away, tiny Haas F1 is somehow in the driver\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n

Haas enters Miami in a surprising position \u2014 sitting fourth in the constructors\u2019 standings through the first three races of the season, a remarkable result for the smallest team on the grid. But Ayao Komatsu, Haas F1\u2019s team principal and trackside boss, is careful not to get ahead of himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve only done three races. It\u2019s very early days,\u201d he said in an interview with Yahoo Finance.<\/p>\n

He credits the strong start to the team\u2019s relentless focus on preparation, a necessary ingredient given its lack of financial resources compared to bigger teams.<\/p>\n

During preseason testing in Barcelona and Bahrain, Haas ran 154 laps on the very first day of the shakedown, when some rivals didn\u2019t show up until the final day. \u201cFor us, as the smallest team, we had to get there day one, running reliably. Then we can learn,\u201d Komatsu said.<\/p>\n

While all teams operate under F1\u2019s cost cap, Haas still spends less than its competitors. \u201cIf money were everything, we should be right at the back,\u201d he said plainly. \u201cMoney is a necessity, but it doesn\u2019t guarantee success.\u201d<\/p>\n

With more than a decade of experience across teams, including BAR Honda (HMC<\/a>) and Renault (RNO.PA<\/a>), Komatsu has developed a clear philosophy: In a sport where marginal gains are everything, team culture is a performance variable.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want everybody to understand how they\u2019re contributing to our ultimate goal, which is the sporting result out on the track,\u201d he explained. For a team of Haas\u2019s size, just under 400 employees \u2014 dwarfed by outfits like Mercedes and Ferrari with upwards of 1,200 staff \u2014 cohesion isn\u2019t just a nice-to-have.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we are not a team, we don\u2019t stand a chance,\u201d Komatsu said.<\/p>\n

That culture, he said, also shapes their approach to the sweeping 2026 regulatory changes on the horizon \u2014 new cars, new engines, new technical parameters. For a smaller team with fewer resources to iterate, the priority is nailing the fundamentals early and building from there.<\/p>\n

And the stakes are high, not just for team performance but also for its image in growing markets like the US, now that Toyota (TM<\/a>) is in tow as its lead sponsor.<\/p>\n

F1\u2019s surging popularity in the US comes as Apple became the exclusive broadcast partner<\/a> for Formula One in the US, significantly raising the sport\u2019s profile. (Yahoo Finance partner Yahoo Sports will begin streaming F1 practice and qualifying sessions across its broadcast platforms starting this weekend in Miami.)<\/p>\n

Komatsu didn\u2019t address the streaming changes, which have caused some consternation for fans who are used to watching F1 on free broadcast TV and cable. But he saw firsthand Apple\u2019s effect on the sport last year, when the it was rumored to have secured the broadcast rights and also promoted its biggest film to date, \u201cF1: The Movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year I came to New York\u2019s Times Square for the premiere of the F1 movie. When I got out of the car, I just could not believe it,\u201d he said. \u201cThe atmosphere, all the big screens \u2014 that\u2019s something I couldn\u2019t have imagined five years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Haas \u2014 now the second American team, along with Cadillac, starting this year \u2014 that growth creates unique opportunities. During his New York visit this week, Komatsu rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange, a moment he described as part of a broader effort to build the team\u2019s story with American fans. \u201cNothing is going to happen very quickly, but we\u2019re planting seeds,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Central to Haas\u2019s growth ambitions is a deepening partnership with Toyota, led by chairman Akio Toyoda.<\/p>\n

Komatsu described their first meeting in Toyoda\u2019s Tokyo office as unexpectedly personal: \u201cHe\u2019s a very passionate guy. He\u2019s a racing guy.\u201d The collaboration goes beyond engineering support, with both organizations committed to developing young drivers, engineers, and mechanics through the unique pressures of Formula One competition.<\/p>\n

\u201cFormula One as a platform is ideal to build something like that,\u201d Komatsu said, with the Haas team aiding Toyota\u2019s engineers with real-world experience while benefiting from the immense mechanical and R&D resources that only a company like Toyota could provide.<\/p>\n
