The Giro d’Italia’s ‘Grand Arrival’
\nwill be at the Circus Maximus for the first time this year as
\nthe world’s second biggest stage race behind the Tour de France
\nends in Rome for the fourth year running next month, organisers
\nsaid Wednesday.

\n\t\t\t\tNewspaper and TV proprietor and Torino soccer club owner Urbano
\nCairo, chairman of the RCS media group which owns the La
\nGazzetta dello Sport newspaper, Italy’s biggest selling daily
\nand the organiser of the event, said the arrival at the ancient
\nRoman chariot racing stadium will be a “grand celebration”.

\n\t\t\t\tIt will be the fourth consecutive year and the eighth in its
\nhistory that the Italian capital will host the final stage of
\nthe Giro d’Italia, now in its 109th edition.

\n\t\t\t\tThe final route was unveiled on Wednesday at the Capitoline
\nHill: starting from EUR, then passing through Ostia, along the
\nRoman coast, and finally returning through the city streets with
\nthe finish at the Circus Maximus.

\n\t\t\t\tThis last stage is a new departure from last year’s edition, for
\nan event that, as Rome’s mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, emphasized,
\n“is becoming a tradition.
\n

\n\t\t\t\t“We can no longer talk about experimentation,” added the mayor
\nat the press conference, which also unveiled the new Maglia Rosa
\nlader’s pink jersey, which will have “Io sono Friuli Venezia
\nGiulia” as its official sponsor, as well as a dedicated section
\non the collar to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Italian
\nRepublic.

\n\t\t\t\tFor this reason, Cairo, president of RCS MediaGroup, called the
\nGiro “a grand celebration,” made so by Rome, which “provides a
\nfantastic setting.”
\nAlso in attendance were RCS Group CEO Paolo Bellino, Rome’s
\ncouncilor for major events, sport, tourism, and fashion,
\nAlessandro Onorato, and former champion and two-time Giro winner
\nVincenzo Nibali, who described the capital as “an incredible
\nshowcase” for the Giro.

\n\t\t\t\tThe race through the streets of Rome is scheduled for May 31,
\nwhen the competing cyclists will battle it out over the 131 km
\nroute. Between EUR and Circus Maximus, there will be many
\npassages through iconic sites, from the Colosseum to the Baths
\nof Caracalla, with the urban section structured as a 9.5km
\ncircuit to be repeated eight times.
\n

\n\t\t\t\tIt will alternate between short undulations and long straights
\nconnected by sometimes challenging curves.

\n\t\t\t\tThe road surface will be mostly asphalt with a few short
\nsections of cobblestones, the famous “sanpietrini.”
\nThe final kilometers, however, will feature only a few slight
\nchanges in direction.

\n\t\t\t\tThe final 350m straight is asphalt, with a 5% gradient halfway
\nthrough the final kilometer.

\n\t\t\t\tAccording to Nibali, the route is poised to provide thrills.

\n\t\t\t\t“After all, Rome is a city that always offers unique
\nexperiences,” said The Shark, who retired in 2022.

\n\t\t\t\tNibali, one of seven cyclists who have won all three of
\ncycling’s Grand Tours in their career – having won the 2010
\nVuelta a Espa\u00f1a, the 2013 and 2016 Giro d’Italias, and the 2014
\nTour de France, added:
\n“I’ve never had the pleasure of finishing the Corsa Rosa here,
\nand I’m disappointed about that, but it has been wonderful to
\nsee the relationship between the city and the Giro evolve.”<\/p>\n
