Zwift, the gamified virtual training platform that for years has dominated the category, has acquired Rouvy, the Czech-based company that spent nearly two decades building a very different kind of indoor riding experience based on augmented reality.\u00a0<\/p>\n The two companies have long been positioned as the opposite ends of the market. Just last August, Rouvy CEO and co-founder Petr Samek told Escape that, “If someone enjoys the social aspect or competitive racing, they’ll likely stick with Zwift. But if a rider prefers less-busy, more-immersive rides using real-world footage … then Rouvy is the right fit.”<\/p>\n Now, the two are to be operated under the same umbrella. In the press release announcing the acquisition \u2013 with no details on the price of the deal \u2013 Zwift’s co-founder and CEO Eric Min framed the acquisition as complementary rather than consolidating. “Rouvy’s differentiated experience is proof we can be stronger together,” he said in the statement, adding that the companies will “continue to operate independently, with differentiated roadmaps and subscription packages.”\u00a0<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u2018We want to be the Netflix of cycling\u2019<\/p>\n Rouvy\u2019s rise to become the second-largest brand in the indoor cycling market is part of its CEO\u2019s ambition to make indoor training a natural part of every rider\u2019s life.<\/p>\n That means that for now, the two platforms will continue to co-exist, and current users will likely see little change. “Rouvy will continue to be the Rouvy you all know and love, with the same team,” Samek added in the statement. However, whatever the future looks like, this acquisition is the largest that the segment that has been consolidating a lot in the last couple of years has seen by far.\u00a0<\/p>\n From pursuer to pursued<\/p>\n Rouvy itself has been busy as an acquirer before now turning to be the acquired. In January 2025, the company acquired FulGaz after Ironman, which had previously bought the Australian app, abruptly laid off the entire FulGaz team and sold the assets to the Czech company. <\/p>\n This post is for subscribers only Already have an account?
