Daredevil: Born Again<\/a> season two<\/a> might not quite be racking up the ratings<\/a>, but fans who are turning in are now realizing the show\u2019s slow-burn pleasures<\/a>\u2014and were rewarded this week by a jaw-dropping twist. While you\u2019d think a plot point as important as a character\u2019s death would be something planned with precision, it turns out it was a decision made not in the scripting process, but in the editing room after the fact.<\/p>\n

Sorry, fans of Deputy Mayor Daniel Blake, played by Michael Gandolfini.<\/p>\n

Buck Cashman, played by Arty Froushan, took him out of the picture in the climax of episode seven, \u201cThe Hateful Darkness.\u201d Though both characters are in league with Vincent D\u2019Onofrio\u2019s Kingpin, a.k.a. Mayor Wilson Fisk, Blake and Cashman clashed over the fate of journalist BB Urich (Genneya Walton); as they\u2019re brawling, Cashman shoots Blake dead.<\/p>\n

However, as Variety<\/a> reports, that\u2019s not how the scene was intended to play out. Instead, Cashman aimed but didn\u2019t fire. He allowed Blake to escape but then found himself having to lie to Kingpin about what happened.<\/p>\n

Showrunner Dario Scardapane realized, however, that storyline didn\u2019t feel \u201cearned.\u201d Blake living and going back to work for Fisk was \u201ckind of meh and a non-story\u2026 He and Buck, in their twisted friendship, both had to be true to who they were. That\u2019s the last moment because everything afterwards seemed kind of like a weird, lame coda that didn\u2019t pay off.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the editing room, team Daredevil decided to try reworking the scene. \u201cThey mocked it up really fast, and you could have heard a pin drop in the editing room after that\u2014like it is at the end of the episode. It\u2019s just like, holy shit,\u201d Scardapane recalled.<\/p>\n

Then, of course, both actors involved had to be informed that the episode had undergone a major shift from what they\u2019d filmed. Fortunately, it sounds like they took it really well, especially Gandolfini.<\/p>\n

When Scardapane called him, Gandolfini\u2019s response was, \u201c\u2018It\u2019s the right choice.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Added Scardapane, \u201cIt was funny because there were scenes shot of him after that moment, and it really feels like we\u2019re telling the wrong story here. I think it\u2019s a testament to how much we all love him, that we knew this character probably should not survive but we just couldn\u2019t bring ourselves to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
