Using advanced analytical methods and a rigorous, bioassay\u2011guided approach, the research team\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0that the antiviral activity did not originate from\u00a0isoquercitrin\u00a0itself, but rather from two previously unknown triterpenoid compounds.<\/p>\n
Though present at only 0.4 per cent of the analyzed extract, these newly identified molecules, named\u00a0dicitriosides, proved to be\u00a0up to 25 times\u00a0more active than the original extract against Ebola virus and SARS\u2011CoV\u20112 under experimental conditions.<\/p>\n
As such, they illustrated the efficacy at pharmacologically achievable concentrations.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis discovery illustrates how compounds present in vanishingly small amounts in nature can have major therapeutic potential,\u201d said Mbikay. \u201cIt also underscores the importance of carefully examining the true composition of natural products used in biomedical research.\u201d<\/p>\n
