The search at the Prairie Green Landfill north of Winnipeg has officially come to a close.<\/p>\n
The families of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran, both of Long Plain First Nation, fought hard for the search after\u00a0Jeremy Skibicki was convicted of first-degree murder for the deaths of Harris, Myran, and two other Indigenous women.<\/p>\n
Skibicki\u00a0admitted to killing them and disposing of their remains in garbage bins. The remains of one of the women, Rebecca Contois, were found in a different landfill,\u00a0while the remains of an unidentified woman, named Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe (Buffalo Woman) by Indigenous grassroots groups, have not been located.<\/p>\n
The official search was launched Dec. 2, 2024, two years after Winnipeg police initially announced they would not 0search. Authorities believed the remains of Harris and Myran were disposed of at the privately owned landfill northwest of Winnipeg in May 2022.<\/p>\n

The province says the search was completed and decommissioned in a safe and fiscally responsible manner,\u00a0with a final cost of $18.4 million, much less than previous estimates that ran as high as $184 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The conclusion of the search was commemorated with private ceremonies that honoured the lives of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran and the strength of their families throughout the difficult journey.<\/p>\n
