Surrey, B.C.\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Council\u00a0has\u00a0approved an $11.6-million\u00a0contract\u00a0to install\u00a0new water mains and upgrade\u00a024 Avenue\u00a0in South Surrey\u00a0to\u00a0support\u00a0future\u00a0housing in the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAs Surrey continues to grow, it\u2019s essential that we invest in the infrastructure needed to\u00a0deliver more\u00a0homes\u00a0and\u00a0support\u00a0complete communities\u00a0in our city,\u201d said Mayor Brenda Locke. \u201cThese upgrades will\u00a0ease pressure on our roads\u00a0and\u00a0provide\u00a0reliable water services for current and future residents.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The project includes\u00a0two\u00a0kilometres of new water mains along 24 Avenue\u00a0(166 Street to 172 Street) and 172 Street (24 Avenue to 20 Avenue),\u00a0serving\u00a0Grandview Heights\u2019\u00a0neighbourhoods including\u00a0Darts Hill and Redwood\u00a0Heights.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
To minimise disruptions, the contract also includes coordinated upgrades along 24 Avenue to improve safety and traffic flow:<\/p>\n
Widening from two to four lanes, with pedestrian and cycling paths, between the 16500 Block and 168 Street\u00a0Widening from two to three lanes, with\u00a0the\u00a0additional\u00a0lane,\u00a0as well as\u00a0pedestrian and cycling paths,\u00a0on\u00a0north\u00a0side,\u00a0between 168 Street and 172 Street\u00a0<\/p>\n
The\u00a0work is part of a broader effort to\u00a0accelerate housing supply and build critical infrastructure,\u00a0supported\u00a0in part through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation\u2019s Housing Accelerator Fund.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Construction\u00a0is\u00a0expected to start in July\u00a0and\u00a0be\u00a0completed\u00a0by\u00a0summer 2027.\u00a0<\/p>\n
