{"id":639358,"date":"2026-04-30T21:01:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T21:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/639358\/"},"modified":"2026-04-30T21:01:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T21:01:10","slug":"downtown-toronto-hate-motivated-assault-suspect-arrested","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/639358\/","title":{"rendered":"Downtown Toronto hate-motivated assault: suspect arrested"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A suspect has been arrested in connection with an unprovoked assault in downtown Toronto that is being investigated as a hate-motivated offence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Toronto police said it happened in the area of College Street and Spadina Avenue on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A man allegedly punched another person in the face during an \u201cunprovoked interaction,\u201d during which he also made anti-Black statements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Police said a physical fight shortly ensued, and the suspect later fled the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Officers responded and subsequently located the man and arrested him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tps.ca\/media-centre\/news-releases\/65808\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tps.ca\/media-centre\/news-releases\/65808\/\">In a news release on Thursday<\/a>, police identified him as 47-year-old Chris Meier.
