A Brampton high school student\u2019s system designed to simulate and optimize medical manufacturing has won his school $10,000 in technology.<\/p>\n
The prize comes from the Samsung\u2019s Solve for Tomorrow Contest, a challenge for Canadian students in Grades 6 to 12 to use Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math to develop innovative solutions.<\/p>\n
Central Peel Secondary School student Rehan Jafar designed a 2D-simulation of the manufacturing process of synthetic polymers, used in touch screens and wearable biosensors.<\/p>\n
Jafar says his Eco Volt simulation platform can cut down on energy use in manufacturing and reduce electronic waste by \u201coptimizing electropolymerization before a lab experiment is ever run.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you can predict optimal synthesis conditions computationally, you eliminate trial-and-error energy consumption at the very first stage of manufacturing \u2013 you reduce chemical waste before it\u2019s even generated,\u201d Jafar said in his submission to the Solve for Tomorrow Contest.<\/p>\n
Eight National Finalist teams presented their projects live at Samsung Canada Headquarters in Mississauga to a panel of expert judges, and Jafar won third place in the contest and a $10,000 technology voucher for Central Peel Secondary School.<\/p>\n
He also won another $5,000 voucher for the Fan Favourite Award.<\/p>\n
