Electronic Arts\u2019 \u201cBattlefield\u201d is drawing fire from all sides as five studios have submitted bids for the Christopher McQuarrie\/Michael B. Jordan package<\/a>, with Warner Bros. Discovery, Amazon MGM Studios, Sony, Universal and Netflix all in the fight for what is shaping up to be the biggest bidding war of the year, The Wrap has exclusively learned.<\/p>\n

McQuarrie is set to write, direct and produce an adaptation of the bestselling video game series, while recent \u201cSinners\u201d Oscar winner\u00a0Michael B. Jordan<\/a>\u00a0is onboard to produce and potentially star.<\/p>\n

The first video game in the series, \u201cBattlefield 1942,\u201d launched for PC and Mac in 2002. Since then, the series went from computer platforms to video game consoles and has covered everything from Vietnam to the far future. Last year\u2019s \u201cBattlefield 6\u201d was rumored to be one of the most expensive video games ever created and became the bestselling game of last year (and of the entire franchise).<\/p>\n

Video games are having a moment, with a number of high-profile projects in the works at every studio and \u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie,\u201d from Illumination, Nintendo and Universal, a certifiable blockbuster and the biggest movie of 2026 so far, with $764 million worldwide.<\/p>\n

Other video game-based movies set for release this year include New Line Cinema\u2019s \u201cMortal Kombat II,\u201d Sony\u2019s \u201cResident Evil\u201d and Paramount\u2019s \u201cStreet Fighter,\u201d along with a new \u201cAngry Birds\u201d movie (also from Paramount). Next year will see the highly anticipated release of \u201cThe Legend of Zelda\u201d from Nintendo and Sony.<\/p>\n

And the \u201cBattlefield\u201d package comes as Paramount is readying its own feature film adaptation of rival video game franchise \u201cCall of Duty,\u201d which has Taylor Sheridan and Peter Berg set to write and Berg onboard to direct.<\/p>\n

McQuarrie is coming off of directing the last two \u201cMission: Impossible\u201d movies \u2014 \u201cDead Reckoning\u201d and \u201cThe Final Reckoning\u201d \u2014 back to back through COVID and strikes, and has spent the better part of the last decade embedded in that franchise.<\/p>\n

The Oscar-winning \u201cThe Usual Suspects\u201d screenwriter struck up a close relationship with Tom Cruise while working on \u201cValkyrie\u201d and later \u201cEdge of Tomorrow,\u201d at which time Cruise decided he\u2019d be a good fit for what became \u201cMission: Impossible \u2013 Rogue Nation,\u201d and he broke with precedent by directing the next three installments of the franchise. Before \u201cRogue Nation,\u201d McQuarrie directed Cruise in 2012\u2019s \u201cJack Reacher.\u201d<\/p>\n

A rep for Electronic Arts declined to comment.<\/p>\n
