{"id":639850,"date":"2026-05-01T02:02:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T02:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/639850\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T02:02:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T02:02:11","slug":"quebec-solidaire-urges-caq-to-invest-in-montreals-metro-network-montreal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/639850\/","title":{"rendered":"Qu\u00e9bec Solidaire urges CAQ to invest in Montreal\u2019s M\u00e9tro network &#8211; Montreal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Qu\u00e9bec solidaire is calling on the Coalition Avenir Qu\u00e9bec government to secure the province\u2019s share of the new <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/canada\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canada<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/public-transit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Public Transit<\/a> Fund, which came into effect April 1, to address the deteriorating state of the Montreal <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/metro\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Metro<\/a> system.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Co-spokesperson Ruba Ghazal said the government is delaying access to roughly $5 billion in federal funding, adding the money belongs to Quebecers and noting other provinces have already moved forward.<\/p>\n<p>Her comments came hours after service across the metro network was temporarily halted during the Thursday morning rush.<\/p>\n<p>Ghazal said Quebec should invest the federal funds in public transit, particularly the Montreal Metro, and urged Premier Christine Fr\u00e9chette to act quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767930311_275_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get breaking Canada news delivered to your inbox as it happens so you won't miss a trending story.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n<p>Get breaking Canada news delivered to your inbox as it happens so you won&#8217;t miss a trending story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am telling the CAQ that Montrealers are not under the other citizens of Quebec,\u201d said Ghazal.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to Global News, the provincial government said discussions with Ottawa are progressing well and there is no indication the funding will not be forthcoming.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Ghazal also echoed concerns raised by Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada, saying Montrealers should receive their fair share of investment.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de transport de Montr\u00e9al, 35 metro stations currently require repairs, including five considered urgent: De L\u2019\u00c9glise, Peel, Champ-de-Mars, Fabre and Saint-Michel.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Canada<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Transit Alliance coordinator Francis Garnier said more than 800,000 commuters rely on the metro daily and warned that without new funding, service disruptions could worsen and stations could face closure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the Montreal Metro is not running well, Montreal isn\u2019t running well overall,\u201d said Garnier.<\/p>\n<p>He added that while funding for Quebec roads has increased, investment in public transit has stagnated since 2013, contributing to the system\u2019s decline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wouldn\u2019t have been in a state of disrepair if we were careful and if we had done the proper maintaining,\u201d added Garnier.<\/p>\n<p>The STM says it needs $600 million annually over 10 years to maintain existing infrastructure and service levels.
